Painting: Watercolor how-to video: Complete Watermedia Workshop with Steven Quiller by Stephen Quiller 5_bulb Review this video!

Watermedia is a term that encompasses any medium using water to thin or dilute the paint. This includes watercolor, gouache, acrylic and casein.

The purpose of this program is to give the viewer a solid foundation in each of these watermedia and how they work in combination .

First, I demonstrate and discuss each of these watermedia and their visual qualities and handling characteristics when used transparent, translucent and opaque. Then I discuss and demonstrate different watermedia combinations such as watercolor and gouache or watercolor and casein. I demonstrate a watermedia and drawing media approach as well as my approach to collage. At this time I talk of different paper supports that I paint on and why I choose one or another for a particular work.

You will view the demonstration from the start to finish.

I start with the drawing and discuss the composition and what I am pursuing with my inspiration. Then the painting is executed in acrylic and casein, two of my favorite media, along with some drawing media.

Finally, I show a gallery of my paintings and talk of the work along with the media used and why it is use

Stephen Quiller is a great painter, and also an excellent teacher. These two DVDs were very informative. I also like the demo's but wish he would have explained what service he was painting on when using Casein. He spoke about how he arranged his colors, but never said what he was painting on.

~ very clear explanations ~ he's very good at explaining things without killing them in the process ~ much care went into preparing the verbal presentation : excellent content and style ~ presented with energy ~ Stephen Quiller does not assume that you will only want to copy his work at all ~ he shows what he likes to do and explains why but also makes it clear that there are many many ways to paint ~ Stephen Quiller's painting is very confident and loose and not rigidly bound within outlines ~ He builds his paintings with brushstrokes ~ his paintings are not tinted drawings ~ he has contagious enthusiasm for lbuilding a painting with layers ~ I will watch this again, probably 2 or 3 times

Steven Quiller first walks through each of the principal forms of water media (acrylic, watercolor, casein, gouache) and presents the properties of each while creating a painting.

From there he shows you how he combines them, using them together in ways that takes advantages of the strengths of each media while turning negatives into positivies. Listening to him working through a painting while he works with multiple types of water media was a real eye-opener and the things that I learned will, without a doubt, make me a better artist.

The only downside I noted was that this tends to spend a LOT more time with acrylic and casein than watercolor or gouache. In fact, almost the entire second DVD was spent on an acrylic/casein painting.
