How to Build a Scale Release Automatic

...with Chris Crawford

Knifemaking how-to video: How to Build a Scale Release Automatic by Chris Crawford 4_bulb Review this video!

The video covers:

* The principal behind designing your own scale release auto * The parts and tools used for making the knife * The methods used to make and fit up all of the knife’s parts * And how to assemble the working knife

Building a scale release auto is an advanced level knifemaking project. It helps to have some experience in building folding knives prior to starting this project. If you have made a lock-back folder, then you are well on your way to building a scale release auto.

Because of the advanced nature of this project, the video does not cover:

* How to grind the bevels and edge on the blade * How to heat-treat the blade, lock-bar, and back * And How to clean up the bolsters and scales

If you need help with these previous steps, there are many good “how to” books and videos available that cover basic knifemaking techniques. There are also many informative knifmaking tutorials available online.

This is a well made video for the experienced knifemaker. The editing keeps the process flowing and the details of the scale release mechanism are well defined.

Chris Crawford seems to be a nice guy and he makes a pretty good looking knife. The production quality of his video, however, is quite amateurish. The cameraman failed to zoom in at numerous points were it would have been appropriate, never moves his tripod -so when Chris is using his milling machine his arms obscure the work, and since they are filming in an open garage there is the distracting noise of wind blowing across the microphone. This is an "okay" video, but not one that I would recommend highly.

He does a pretty good job explaining the process, but I am still a little confused on the machining for the coil spring, and I will call him and ask him when I am ready to build an automatic. The disturbing thing was hearing the camera man's breathing at some points, and some of the focus was fumbled, due to the camera man not knowing where to frame.

I enjoyed watching this video. The process of creating and fitting the pieces were well explained, If the production standards of the video were a bit low it was still a pleasure to see a craftsman at work in his shop.

I thought this was a really good video. Aside from the comments of others on the lighting and the fact that the garage door was open I felt like I learned a lot from this video. Especially about folders in general. I also like the way the info was presented. I hope Chris does more videos.

Was very informative. Thought the filming left a little to be desired, rather dark in some spots, and a lot of dead space in presentation. Found out what I wanted in the first half of film. Couldn't see the second half, as my player wouldn't run it due to scratches on the surface of the disc. I wanted to see how the action worked, and this I did learn.

I am sorry to say that but it's the worst knife making video I've seen. Although I picked up some information from this DVD but I was so irritated that camera was looking at the back of the knife maker I was about to trash this DVD. Also lot's of outside noise made voice in DVD hard to hear. Bright background made things hard to see.

Chris gives a lot of information. Sometimes very difficult to follow because of the lighting and poor shot selection.

The previous reviews are pretty accurate, both pros and cons. Some close ups would have been really helpful, particularly in the mill work on the blades and bolsters and on setting the springs. That said, he has the voice of experience and he gives good advice on avoiding many pitfalls in the process of building the knife.
