Very helpful! Clear, to the point instructions. He 'fixed' some of my main difficulties with this type of grinding.

A good demo and much easier for me as a beginner than hollow. Lots of little tips thrown in and enough theory on the whiteboard at the beginning to help you understand where he was going to go in the hands on part. Helped me better discern why this cheap blade from Pakistan wasn't well made and why my custom knife is a work of art.

I thought this was a really good video. Very thorough and complete. I really learned a lot from this video and I like the way the info was presented. It also has a really good section on correcting problems that you'll encounter when learning to flat grind. Definitely worth renting.

I liked this video a great deal. H. Dean not only shows you how to grind but why you should grind in a particular way. There were also some good tips on how to fix your mistakes as well as what you should be looking for in a correctly ground blade.

Excellent video, Harvey is a natural teacher.

The style taught is a flat grind to near the edge with a little convexity.

The knife ground from the video starts as a beginner's forged blank, so it isn't all that pre-contoured, and you get the sense of what it is like to forge from a blank, as well as a forging.

The only warning I would issue is that while this tape is totally understandable from a beginner's perspective, you need to be a beginner with a clue. No specialized terminology is explained in advance, and the broad brush of the knife building process is not set out. A completely oblivious beginner could start with Ed Fowler's tape, or any of the other tapes that show the process from beginning to end, or just click around the web and learn the basics before taking on this tape.

I watched this one right after watching a hollow grinding video. I found them to be very similarly structured. But while I didn't feel that I gained much from the other this was refreshingly laden with good information and tips that the rest of us could use.

Though some of Dean's techniques are a bit unorthodox, this DVD is well worth the rental fee, as it typically retails for $30. Decent audio, production and lighting, plus a sharpening how-to and a bonus section outlining the most common mistakes usually made during beveling and how to fix them. Overall an excellent instructional DVD for the beginner on how to get started flat grinding using a 2x72 belt sander.

Great video quality, well thought out presentation, easy to understand techniques presented. I really wish that I had the opportunity to watch this video when I first bought my grinder. It would have saved a lot of steel and a lot of grinding belts. There are a lot of years of experience packed into this one and it shows.

If you want to make knives....you want to see this.....trust me.

I enjoyed this video and found some good tips. I liked the fact that the last 15 minutes was spent on how to fix mistakes in grinding... the kind we all make. I was disappointed that the final sanding of the blade was not included on this video and was on another video which SmartFlix does not have available.
