Steel Sculpture with George Goehl

...with George Goehl

Sculpture how-to video: Steel Sculpture with George Goehl by George Goehl 4_bulb Review this video!

Steel Sculpture 1

This video assumes that you know how to use the Oxygen Acetylene Torch

The focus is on geometric standing sculptures using 1/8th inch mild steel.

The steps start with choosing a design, cutting the shapes, welding the shapes together, grinding the welds, sanding and applying a spray finish.

Three options are shown for cutting the shapes. They are a shear, oxy/ace cutting torch and the plasma cutter. Choose which ever one that you have available.

Emphasis on torch techniques for gas welding, broken down into three phases, tack welding, fusions welding and gas welding using the gas filler rod. This video is about techniques! Although designs are shown, the main focus is on technique. Once the techniques are established, the viewer can then do any of the pieces shown and go on to create their own designs. The possibilities are endless.

These techniques require a minimum of tools and equipment. An oxygen acetylene torch outfit, and a grinder/sander. There are other tools that can be added, but these are the basics.

Instructions for using the Oxygen Acetylene Cutting Torch. These include using the cutting head and regulator settings.

For materials: 1/8th inch hot rolled mild steel and mild steel gas welding filler rod. Hot rolled mild steel is about the most inexpensive metal that you can buy, yet enabling you to create outstanding contemporary sculptures.

Although you'll see me working on parts of the different designs illustrated in this video, we'll focus on one piece from start to finish. This particular sculpture incorporates all the techniques involved in making any of the sculptures shown.

As explained in the video, one idea leads into another. While working on one piece, ideas begin to evolve for future pieces.

Once you get started with these techniques, you'll begin to understand what I mean when I say the the "possibilities are almost endless".

One of the finishes demonstrated is "rough texturing" the mild steel. This is done with the oxy/ace cutting torch. This finish can be used by itself, or in a combination of ground and sanded finished.

Banding or forming steel bands into graceful arcs is demonstrated.

Once you've got the techniques down you're on your way to either duplicating the designs in the video and or creating your own geometric contemporary designs.

Steel Sculpture 2

Steel Sculpture #2 is a continuation of Steel sculpture #1. It picks up where #1 left off. This video primarily focuses on wall sculptures.

Starting off with a very simple design that can be expanded into a number of distinctive wall hangings.

We'll begin by laying out the triangles.

Once the layout is complete, it is on to cutting out the triangles from 1/8th inch mild steel. You'll be referring to Steel Sculpture #1 for ways to cut the 1/8th inch mild steel.

For the initial assembly, in this case we'll be using bolts and nuts. Layering the triangles so that there is a feeling of depth.

This video, like steel Sculpture #1 is about techniques. The designs in this video are impressive, but more important than the designs are the techniques. The techniques included in the video will open up windows in your mind for your own designs.

First off, let me state that I am a fan of George's DVDs. The production quality is great. He covers the subject matter in the title like a glove. Both these DVDs assume that you have a basic working shop skills and torch training. If you don't, then you will need George's DVD on the Oxy/Acyt torch or some other one and also a basic metal working DVD. With that out of the way, I can say that steel sculpture 1 and 2 has given me a load of great ideas and a couple of tricks that I hadn't thought of before. My only problem with both of them is at the end he doesn't really give the finished item enough screen time and show it from all sides. There is plenty of space left on the disk and I feel that this would be helpful.
