EXCELLENT!!! He's a very good speaker and I can tell he really knows his craft! I purchased his book which I haven't received yet but I'm sure it will be as good as the video. After watching this video I'm also thinking about taking a workshop from him in Canada.

I actually own this DVD set. An excellent "Plein Air" class. He is a great teacher. I have re-watched his DVD's several times, picking up something new each time. I would highly reccommend this DVD

For beginning/intermediate painters. Nothing an advanced artist doesn't already know. He does a painting that even he isn't happy with. I felt bad for him. Couldn't they have filmed it over? Good review of basic compositional principles though.

Ian explains the basics of excellent composition in a very well thought out way. This first disc compliments his new book, even though a lot of the material is in the book. However, I found that I learned a bit more and watched it three times. Excellent for any landscape painter, in particular. Those artists that paint plein air and are having trouble nailing down a good composition will benefit in particular. I recommend disc 1 over disc 2 of the set. Thanks, Ian, for a job well done.

Not nearly as good as disc one. Maybe if you're just beginning to paint it couldn't hurt. Stick with disc one.

Very, very helpful. I would suggest disk one for any painter, just as a review if nothing else. Disk two shows the theory put into practice. If you are early in your artistic life and like seeing a good painter do a landscape, you would enjoy it. If you are farther along, I would say it was optional but quite informative.

I have viewed Eric's first video and found this new two-disc video to be mostly based on the first one. His ideas as they relate to composition are good, and helpful to those who have no idea what they are doing. It gives you guidelines as to how to find you real subject (in a landscape) and how to set it up as your subject. How the composing of the whole leads the viewer to the main subject. More importantly is one learns how to keep the viewer in the picture and how not to lead them out, but rather around the picture and back to the point of interest. There is lots of good ideas, and he names about six different armatures that can be used to form your composition..

Now this is a gent who I wish I could study from in person. I've not had formal art training but always love all kinds of art. Now that I am painting I see how missing out the very basics, like composition, leaves a gap. Ian Roberts fills that gap and I think that whatever stage you are as a hobbyist you will gain tremendous important and necessary information to enhance and improve your own artwork. This is a MUST DVD and I only wish I had seen it earlier on Smartflix. Because of this superior Dvd I just might also get the book for ongoing reference after the notes I've made from watching the Dvd. Definitely recommend!
