Joseph is a highly accomplished watercolour artist who believes that it is important to work outdoors, on location, as much as possible. Painting in Australia he creates a magical mood in his watercolours as he paints a Melbourne street in the evening light and captures the atmosphere of coastal scenes along the Great Ocean Road. He also paints a stunning panorama of the Yarra Valley and a colourful afternoon at the races

Fantastic. Painting after painting explained in detail on location, including how "to make use of happy accidents".
This was an informative video. If you are interested in artist colors and mixing technique, you will not gain much specific information. But, if you are interested in a watercolorist's composition and quick approach to capturing the essence of the scene through the composition, while on location, then you'll appreciate this video. Sometimes, because of the dialect variation, an American may have to adjust to an Australian accent. Sometimes a word or two get lost, but that doesn't matter because the painter is always demonstrating. I watched this video three different times, each time gaining further insights into the painter's approach.
I'm a full time artist and still learned a lot from this video. I intend to purchase a copy and have rented his other (earlier) video. The camera angles are useful: I could see how he used the brush which in my opinion is everything with this guy. He doesn't meticulously explain the exact colors he mixes (and says so himself) so absolute beginners may find that lacking. They will certainly benefit from seeing how he applies his color. He does show and explain which colors are on his palette though, and he uses very conventional mixes most watercolorists know - its worth renting this to see how a fairly limited palette can do a lot. There are 5 subjects demonstrated and each addresses slightly different issues. You see him complete each subject with only negligible editing: You can see everything needed to get to the finished result. Most of what is cut is drying time between paint applicaions. In my opinion Zbukvic is the best of a group of very good painters all based in the Melbourne area. The Croatian/Australian accent isn't too distracting ("highlight" sounds like "harlot") especially since everything he says is shown.
As a aspiring watercolorist but avid seeker of fine watercolorists for many years, I would rank Zbukvic as one of the finest watercolor painters living today. He has a complete command of the medium and within the area of landscape painting and his own particular subjects, his technique and facility to achieve an impressionistic realism is remarkable. I've seen many watercolors, but his are unique - his palette, planning and brushwork are an inspiration.
I have his book, as well as his first DVD and I'd have to say this new DVD is a great encore...keep em coming.

Joseph may be a little hard to understand, but the brush speaks for him. He flings that brush and watercolor around and comes up with some beautiful paintings. I enjoyed it. Jerry Pro
Joseph paints with confidence and ease, which in turn, shows beautifully in his work! He is empowering to watch over. I highly recommend this DVD.
I learned a lot by watching Joseph Zbukvic paint harbors, horses, trees, and vineyards. The video shows every step. He makes it fun and interesting.
This instructional video, one by the artist of the three current notables of watercolor from Australia including Robert Wade, and Alvaro Castagnet, has merit in presenting some technique, however it is limited. The first painting failed because of wind in a plain air setting and a second painting was inserted with the hope no notice would be seen. Later paintings became very complex and detailed with no hope to understand the why and where for of the strokes necessary for the painting to be completed. Finally, the color mixes lacked both verbally and pictorally which for the most part is given freely in other instructional videos. There was some alluding to the consistency of the mixture which the artist reported in his book likened to coffee, creamy etc. but it is an methodology that is uninspiring. Overall, I feel this artist is worth viewing but instructionally he has a bit to go.
Joseph Zbukvic is not a talented media personality. He looks very uncomfortable and awkward in front of the camera at the beginning and end of his DVDs. He is, however, a very talented painter--and once he has a brush in his hand he relaxes. This and his other DVD contain very useful instruction. I have his book and love his work. He paints in the traditional British fashion--no gimmicks or clever techniques. The way he paints on an inclined surface and manages the 'bead' of the wash as it progresses down the paper is illuminating, as is his timing when he adds features and details--judging the exact degree of wetness or dryness that is required for the desired effect.
I very much admire the way Zbubic paints and felt I learned several things from the DVD. However, I'd find it more enlightening if he shared more information about the paints and brushes he uses and the reasons why he chose them. All in all, I thought it was worth the rental fee.
Great instruction and theory. He really grasps the nature of watercolor and verbalizes the basics very well. I get it, and find myself looking at nature and knowing how to represent it with the stroke of a brush! Great video, can't wait to see his others.
I absolutely loved Wade's Watercolor On Location!! His manner of explaning, demo, color choices etc.etc. were superb.
