This instructional video features Daniel Greene as he paints a pastel portrait from start to finish, using a posed model. He offers tips on organizing materials and discusses the properties of paper and pastels. He begins by showing us strategies for selecting backgrounds, lighting and choosing natural positions for posed models. I loved this instructional DVD. I can't say enough good things about the clarity with which he presented his instruction. I really felt like I was watching a master with the added benefit of getting into his thought processes in developing the portrait. His explanation in the beginning about working habits, setting up the palette of colors, organization and details about papers and pastel was very helpful. His concentration and logical progression through the work was filled with useful instruction and he did a thorough job of explaining every thing he was doing. I loved his organized approach and the checklist at the end.

I have studied with various local pastel artists here in San Antonio, but being able to see a master at work on DVD was a dream come true. The hardest part about Smartflix is having the patience to wait for the DVD to arrive!

I found this video very helpful. The only addition I would have liked would have been for Mr. Greene to identify the names of the colors he was using. This may be because this is so new to me and one of my big problems is getting just the right color. Otherwise I was more than pleased. Ruth

This was an excellent instructional video - especially for a beginner like me. The only addition I would have liked was for Mr. Greene to name exactly which colors he was using. He indicated how important it is to have many pastels because you must choose exactly the right color, but at a number of instances he would generalize the color (an ochre, instead of naming the specific ochre). But I gained very much from it. Ruth

Daniel Greene is without a doubt the best artist and teacher that I have ever seen. Mr. Greene's teaching style is exceptional. Most artists are great at what they do but cannot teach. You will get great art technique and skill from a master. I highly recommend this video! Diane

Great presenter and great DVD production values. Having a good view of Greene working on the portrait was just mesmerizing. The one drawback I can think of is that I had the assumption that he would touch upon how to achieve colors not in your pastel collection by mixing techniques. His technique instead already assumes a large collection of colors at the ready.

I found this to be an excellent DVD workshop. Daniel Greene's teaching is succinct, relevant and complete for the beginner. I believe his methods can be easily grasped by anyone with an ability to draw, and some small experience with pastels. I am 'young at Art' and had begun with still-life and landscape, feeling that portraiture and figurative painting would be too difficult. Mr Greene's video enticed me to try, and I was astonished with the results. This DVD has changed my direction as an artist.
