International Tree Climbing Champions Rip Tompkins and Ken Palmer host this ArborMaster® Training video series, Chainsaw Safety, Maintenance, and Cutting Techniques. Safe and efficient use of chainsaws requires thorough training. Although DVD's are no substitute for hands-on instruction, this ArborMaster® series is a great addition to any training curriculum. Palmer and Tompkins teach the basics of chainsaw safety and use in an easy-to-understand field application format.
• Chainsaw Safety covers the personal protective equipment that should be used when operating a chainsaw, the components of a chainsaw, and safety features. Then Rip demonstrates safe starting procedures while Ken explains carburetor adjustment for safe and efficient operating. (©1998, 43 min.
• Chainsaw Maintenance focuses on the proper daily and routine maintenance required to keep a saw running and cutting efficiently, including the engine and drive system of the saw, bar maintenance, and sharpening techniques. (©1998, 46 min.)
• Notches, Hinges and Backcuts introduces the fundamental knowledge and skills essential for using a chainsaw in tree-related applications. Ken and Rip discuss the reactive forces that result when using a chainsaw and how kickback can be avoided. (©1998, 30 min.)
• Felling Techniques is a dramatic application of many of the techniques learned in the previous subject. This covers the steps of preparing a felling plan, planning the escape route, estimating the tree’s height, and making the felling cuts. (©1998, 18 min.)
• Limbing and Bucking focuses on techniques for cutting up trees once they are on the ground, including general saw safety and techniques for cutting branches under tension. (©1998, 17 min.)
• Chainsaw Use in Trees is produced for experienced tree climbers who use a chainsaw while climbing. This emphasizes the danger of using a saw aloft and reviews safe operating procedures. (©1998, 19 min.

The video is excellent and does a nice job of explaining the various aspects of using and maintaining a chainsaw.
Decent video, not as comprehensive as I'd expected. I was really interested in learning about actually cutting down trees and making rounds for firewood. They only spent a few minutes on the cuts for actually taking down trees, and a few more on cutting the trees in into movable pieces. The things I was really interested in they only showed a single example for each. I probably could have accessed this info in greater detail online.
It was an overall useful DVD, though a bit dated. They spent a LOT of time on safety gear, superficial maintenance (without undoing even one screw on a chainsaw), and other things not actually near trees. It's good to watch for an overview, but anything detailed you'll have to find elsewhere.
