Review this video!
Schneider sets up his model in warm light in order to fully explain how the color temperature varies between light and shadow areas on the form. Working from the live model, Schneider explains his compositional devices, use of the Munsell Color System in selecting a color scheme, and how to keep the Big Four (shape, value, color temperature, edges) in mind during the painting process. This video is executed in pastel, but is full of useful information for artists in all media. William begins with a discussion of design elements. Viewers will be mesmerized by the emergence of the beautiful model from an abstract foundation of shapes and masses of color.

I found this video to be quite satisfying, the teacher does an excellent job of describing light, temperature and composition value. It is also very entertaining to see how the picture comes to life in a 3D surreal image. Out of a scale from 1-100, I would give this a 89.
Fantastic video. He has wonderful insight on color and composition. He is an excellent instructor. Slow getting started but stay with it. You will find it very informative.
Excellent DVD. I hope to rent it again and again and again. Thanks
After viewing this video, I am compelled to reconfigure my color choices when painting a portrait. The artist's explanations and demonstrations really helped simplify some warm/cool color rules that, previous to viewing, were too complicated. The information about the alternative color wheel is something that I will explore more later, because it wasn't completely clear to me while watching the artist.
The most valuable information given on the video were the four areas of focus. The artist describes them at the beginning, demonstrates their application and follows up with a review of how they were used to make a better portrait.
I've seen a number of instructional videos on painting and I'd say this was one of the better ones. The artist painted a very credible portrait of a stunning model, he explained his choices of colors and his technique, and he was very personable and related with good humor to his audience (me). I have just pulled out of a live life painting class after a few sessions because of a disconnect I felt with the artist (a very good one) and I appreciate even more the opportunity to see how it's done, close up, with DVD instructions like this one. I put high up on that list of "teachers, by example" artists like Morgan Weistling, Daniel Greene, Burton Silverman and Richard Schmid.
