Robert has done it again! Here he shows you how he builds a steel string guitar from start to finish. Over 1400 pictures with step by step audio instructions. This DVD is a slideshow presentation and not video content. He initially created this instructional DVD for his guitar building students. He is now making it available for everyone interested in building their own guitar. It is a must for first time builders and a great source of reference for those already building steel string guitars. It will save you time and money and pay for itself many times over as you embark on the rewarding journey of building your own steel string guitar.

This was a good video for a beginning luthier. It told of some good tool techniques I did not know. I recommend this one for new or intermediate luthiers. I have both books Cumpliano and Kinkead, and this augments them nicely.
I liked the narrative and the humor he injected into his instructions. Such as "If your project is not going as planned, just open up a can of Acme whoop". He actually had cans with professional looking labels. :) I haven't started building yet but if you are the detailed type of person with some previous wood working experience you could build a guitar from this video alone.Especially if you take his advice and buy a kit first. The only down side was that this is not a video per say but still photo sequences of the building process. For certain operations I think it would be more informative to see it done with actual video. Before I start, I am going to check out the Stewart McDonalds kits that come with a video.
Great video and very informative. I highly recommend it.
Even though this is not a video format it is contains some very helpful information on guitar building. Both first time builders and more seasoned builders can benefit from the pictures and narration.
A terrific video resource. A video book I want in my personal library
O'Brien is clearly a good guitar builder and he tells you so several times in this video. This video would be a lot better if O'Brien was a bit humbler and didn't try to be funny. His presentation skills leave a lot to be desired. The information is good but this video is hard to watch. Frank Finocchio's 5 DVD set is much better.
With over 3 hours of instruction and examples, this is an invaluable DVD. I rated it 5 stars but would give it more if I could. His sense of humor is corny, but his knowledge is first class. Even after reading several books on guitar making, this DVD taught me dozens of new ideas. Don't hesitate - rent this DVD. Some people complain because it is a compilation of still shots with dialog. But after seeing the DVD, I think it works great because you have time to study each image as he explains what is happening. I wish I had rented it sooner.
I thought this was on how to make a guitar from scratch; it is actually how to build an acoustic guitar from a kit. I thought this was a "video" with animated instruction. Instead, it was merely a single-shot SLIDE SHOW with narration / no 'video', animation or even special effects. For a slideshow, it was informative, but I wanted to see hands-on techniques, not still shots with verbal commentary.
