Painting A Head - My Approach

...with Everett Raymond Kinstler

Painting: Oil how-to video: Painting A Head - My Approach by Everett Raymond Kinstler 4_bulb Review this video!

For five decades Everett Raymond Kinstler has devoted time to teaching and conducting workshops nationally. Currently he teaches two annual workshops in New York City, one at the Art Students’ League and one at the National Academy of Design. As there is always extraordinary demand for these classes and limited space, Kinstler and filmmaker Colin Patrick Russell have created this DVD on KInstler's approach to painting a head.

I absolutely loved this video! He is a wealth of information! It was inspiring to watch someone so talented and listen to his experiences with other artists. He has known and studied with a great many talented artists and brings these experiences to the easel. This is not a step-by-step how to video.

From a personal view this is a person I would like to have as a friend. He tells a great story and is easy to listen to along with funny jabs to his model, and he can paint and talk at the same time.

This is a must see for anyone. Doesn't really teach you much exactly but just watching the guy in action is enough.

Raymond Kinsler is a terrific painter with a lot to teach. You need to ignore the fact that he talks almost non-stop during the presentation. You get two demos in one video so it's still very much worthwhile.

I was disappointed in this one. There was entirely too much name dropping, as if he seemed to think it added credibility. His talent speaks for itself, he is quite good. I would much rather he had spent all that extra time on showing how he finished the portrait out to achieve his friend's likeness.

Excellent in every way. Calm presentation. Knowledgeable. What an opportunity to watch a master painter. Worth watching more than one time. k.j.f.

Sheesh! What a lot of hot air. This guy goes on and on and on, mostly talking about the past and artists he's known and occasionally puts a little paint on the canvas. I could have skipped this one. It mostly restated what I've learned from other videos.

Mr. Kinstler is a very generous teacher, and has a great deal of professional experience to share in these sessions. A bit of editing would have helped. You may find yourself reviewing in fast forward (as I did) to grasp his technique.

Kintsler is a fantastic painter and has a well deserved reputation. Unless one is a complete neophyte, I wouldn't recommend his CD...not much information unique to his process.

The artist knows what he is doing - but talks too much about other artists.

At times, became very boring and I had to use the Fast Forward button many times.

Easily the worst painting DVD I've watched. I'll admit that I never thought this guy was that great of a painter, but I thought I'd at least learn from some of the stuff he had to show or talk about. But instead he talked too much about artists from the past, as if he was comparing himself to Sargent or Henri or whoever he could think of. He has a reputation, but there's no way he's as good as the people he talks about. And talk about them he does! There's also a short portrait demo he does with students in a class setting, and the result is a mess. Only afterwards does he show the portrait to the camera viewers looking more refined/better, back at his studio, telling us that he was able to rework it. But they don't show us how he did so. Anyway, not a good DVD for learning, as there are far better ones to rent.

Kinstler shows simply and explains his ideas clearly. no attempts to impress you with his virtuosity.

This man is the Teacher's Teacher. I really thought I had seen the top of the line but Everett Raymond Kinstler is cream of the crop. Traditional in many of his approaches he offers the finest and absolute best information that I can ever imagine receiving. Watching him I felt that I was studying at the Sorbonne. He is amazingly talented and tells wonderful stories and has had one of the richest histories of meeting so many influential painters. A real character, he expresses himself well and his art work speaks for itself. Some one mentioned his name dropping....well I was impressed that he was able to learn from so many wonderful artists and pass their information on to us. He is so generous with his knowledge and information. Do not pass up this Video. And of all things, I can't believe that he was teaching in Lyme, CT which is not too far from where I live and I missed his presentation. Kinstler is truly a Master Painter!

I did not like this video as much as others I have watched. The artist talked constantly through it all, but didn't explain as much of his technique as I would have liked. I wouldn't rent it again.

Wow!!! This is one of the best DVDs I have seen on painting the head. The DVD is full of examples, references and knowledge from a true artist. Mr. Kinstler is one of the top portrait artist in the world and is a National Tressure. I loved his references to the great artist of the past Sargent, Sorolla, Zorn etc. He would make a point and substantiate it with numerous quotes and tried and tested techniques." You can't pickup were the old masters left off" unknown. Mr. Kinstler gives the viewer invaluable insight on his former teachers that a truly great Artist/Teacher wishes to share with his students.

I plan on buying this DVD for my collection and I would highly recommend this DVD to students who want more then a "paint by number" video. Those that want to learn the approach and thought process to painting from a generous and great master this is a great DVD.

I thought this was a very well done video for any level painter and it was good for me to just get a bit of a refresher to start back up into portraiture.

I have to agree with David F. "Easily the worst painting DVD I've watched. " I could have rented an audio CD instead of the DVD......wayyyy toooo much talking and not enough painting. I was hoping that after sitting through this agonizing DVD that I would see his technique in the end.....but he finished the painting in his studio....without a camera man......what a waste of a rental!!! Take my advice and don't rent this one.....I either found myself falling asleep....or fast forwarding....

A living master - what else is there to say! Evident from the great anecdotes shared with the viewer from his life-time of painting the greats. Evident from his fluid masterful handling of the brush. Evident from the passion he exudes throughout.

He offers a lot of commentary about himself that gets in the way of his demonstration. I did not find it nearly as instructive as the Dan Gerhartz or Howard Sanden. There were some good messages like using the palette to set color and sticking to values as a key structure element. But you get a lot of other dialog to here those points.

Long and boring. He loves to drop names. He talks on and on but there was not much to learn. Even watching him was not exciting. I see he is a great painter but if he could teach what he knows, we could benefit from his expertise.

Fabulous technique, brush work, color mixtures, approach to the head...discussion of how to allow eyes to emerge, rather than force their likeness was brilliant. I loved the obvious well placed layout, construction, color choices and experience, control....It was a wonderful DVD, watched it three times! Jene Rizzo

Good painter, not so great teacher. It was helpful to watch him paint, but he gave very little insight into technique or his thought process. It was impressive to see how easily he put the features in the right places and built a portrait, but he rambled and repeated himself over and over. Toward the end I muted it and just watched him paint. Dan Gerhartz and Richard Schmid's DVDs were so much better.
