The purpose of this video is to explain the proper method of creating and maintaining the "Ellsworth Grind" on a bowl turning gouge. Also clearly demonstrated are the roughing, shaping, shear scraping and final smoothing cut all done with a gouge using the "Ellsworth Grind".

Of all the turning viedos I own and have seen this is the best one. Why? Because, alot of this viedo is shot from an angle looking over David's shoulder. You feel like you are looking thru David's eyes at the work. You get to see the angle that he is holding the gouge at relative to the work thru David's eyes.
After I took a 3 day class with David Ellsworth at his home in PA I took this viedo home and watched it over and over every time something did not go right in my shop. I now feel like I have really mastered David's gouge.
David is a great instructor and this is the best of his viedos.
The movie was comprehensive and well suited to his signature tool which I'm thrilled with. If anyone saw the size of bowls I had shaped and hollowed with an entry level sorby half inch tool, they'd hit the floor. Production has gone way up. One small suggestion: Mr. Ellsworth seems to assume everyone is turning end grain. He needs to address a few subtle differences when turning side grain.
I would highly recommend this video for anyone who has purchased the Ellsworth Gouge. The camera shots show excellent close ups of the tool at work. Information in this video will give you a basic knowledge of the tool to continue using it until it becomes the workhorse of your tool arsenal. A companion for the gouge without a doubt.
Well worth the money and time to watch. He does make it look very easy, but at least you can see the versitility of this tool.
This is one of the better instructional videos I know of for woodturners. Many focus on techniques of making items such as lidded boxes or bowls while this video focused on actual tool techniques. Granted, to get the most from the video one needs to own the Ellsworth Gouge but, as with the video, it is a truly sweet tool.
This DVD by Ellsworth is a "MUST" for all turners. It is all business.
This is an excellent video with a lot of instructional value for both visual learners and more analytical and technically minded learners. Ellsworth explains in detail his techniques and then demonstrates them in clear, close up shots that show his signature gouge in action. This is worth a look, more than once!
I enjoyed watching and learning. It was perhaps the best of the lathe instructional videos
I am an avid woodturner and found this video to be insightful and easy to follow. His techniques are opposite what most of us know but his video and explanations make perfect sense with the Ellsworth gouge.
One of the better turning videos that I have seen. Very good footage of tool placement of the superflute type bowl gouge.
This is not a review, I have received a new copy of the Ellsworth Signature Gouge from you as the one you have just received was a damaged DVD. I noted on the front of the return envelope that it was damaged and that we had been in touch by email - I hope you picked that up and didn't put it back into inventory. I will make a review when I return the new copy (but I've looked at and it is excellent).
Best, Jon
Ellsworth has designed a fine gouge shape that he uses in place of several deep bowl gouges. His video is worth watching even if you don't choose to buy his gouge as you can apply his cutting techniques using several gouges you may already have. He uses the tip with its shallow bevel almost as a roughing tool, then works to the shoulders with the steeper bevels - it is effectively a long fingernail bowl gouge. You could do the same with two gouges, one shallow and one steep. He has some innovative cuts on the video that could help use your existing gouges.
Personally I have his signature gouge, I think it is worth it. But I won't throw away my old ones, I'll just use them better.
Best, Jon
Great video. David explains the concepts and methods well. Video quality is good as in you can actually see how he is making the cuts. Overall I think I got more benefit out of this turning video than any other I have watched to date.
