I seen all of Dan's instructional videos and they are all good. This one gets down to business by walking you though a fret level on a new neck, as well as some refretting. An excellent primer on fret work.
Dan is awesome, and makes all this look easy.I've been setting up my guitars for years , and still learn new tweaks.
The video was great! I learned alot and Dan Erlewine's manner of teaching is excellent. He slows down and gets into the particulars just as if you were on OJT. I had no idea so much work goes into a good fret job. Kind of intimidating but worthwhile.
A very informative video! I've been doing fret work on my own guitars for 10 years and I learned a lot from watching Dan in this video.
'Fret Basics' was great. All of Erlewine's re-worked productions are great, but they are priced as if they were in the Robb Report or Sharper Image. Purchased from StewMac.com; the 2-hour 'Fret Basics' will cost you over $50 by the time it arrives in your mailbox.
Excellent information on DIY Fret-Jobs. Highly recommend it for viewing.
I really liked fret basics. I got it because I have a couple of guitars that need a fret dress and I didn't know how to do a fret dress or what tools I needed. It was nice that Dan used "things you can find around your house". He did also show you the professional tool that you would use if you wanted to buy it.
So now I feel comfortable that I'll do ok with a fret dress. I do have one guitar that need new frets so I'll be trying that one out first.
The only reason I won't give this DVD a 5 is because some of the close up video was out of focus. This happens cause the camera is on auto focus and it appeared the camera couldn't decide what the most important object was in the frame. It actually annoyed me a lot.
This is an excellent introduction to fret jobs. Dan clearly demonstrates proper technique with a variety of tools. I like the fact that he shows what goes wrong and how to fix problems. Very good.
Very excellent video. Pretty slow in parts, but overall very helpful. If you need to know the "basics" this is a good one to go with.
Very informative and helpful video. A comprehensive and systematic guide to guitar fret dressing, leveling, and replacement. My only criticism is that due to editing for time, the watcher doesn't get a feel for how long some of the steps are supposed to take ie: sanding the fret board, or filing the frets.
But don't let that disuade you from renting this video. If you're interested in doing fret work on your guitar . . . .this is a must see!!!!! Dan does a great job of keeping it simple, understandable, and affordable.

Fret Basics was a very worthwhile rental. It was as informative as I could've expected it to be, and was quite lengthy, i.e. good value IMHO. I may actually end up buying this one. We'll see. Thanks Smartflix, for providing the great service.
Excellent introduction to refretting a stringed instrument.
Dan Erlewine lays out a comprehensive view of fretting in several real-life situations, including two electic guitar jobs and an acoustic guitar with a bound fret board. He makes an effort to use common tools whenever possible. Dan's depth of experience and desire to produce and excellent result permeate the entire video.
I was very impressed and grateful to have access to such a wonderful instructional video.
This video answered a lot of questions for me concerning the mechanics of guitars (I am ignorant about the building side of things). Setting up a truss rod and using a straight edge on the fret board filled BIG gaps in my knowledge. I think it answered my main question, which is how do you re-crown and re-dress somewhat worn frets. I have a Les Paul with fairly worn frets and a refret was quoted at $400. Apparently the re-crown re-dress is done gently with a triangular file followed by lots of sanding. And that was about it! There was no demo of reshaping worn frets, just crowning new frets. Overall a very well put together video.
Excellent and essential for anyone getting into the guitar tech field.
Very informative, : enjoyed it very much.
Dan Erlewine has a tendency to ramble a bit in his videos, but his instructions are very clear as to how to do a fret job. If you follow his very systematic approach, including practicing on "garage sale" guitars, you should have no problems. My first fret job turned out well. With the purchase of a fret press, I think my next fret job will be great.
I previously rented his neck reset video and although it is more complicated than doing a fret job, it was interesting and educational.
