This DVD covers surface preparation and pore filling, choosing and applying a finish, and buffing or rubbing out the finish to a high gloss or satin sheen by hand or machine. Oil varnishes, lacquers, urethanes, waterbornes, shellac and French Polish are covered in detail . The section on French Polish also includes video clips so you can easily learn the technique. Watch as Robert skillfully demonstrates each type of finish on a separate guitar with pictures and step by step audio instructions from beginning to end. This DVD will demystify the finishing process and give you the skills necessary to completely finish your own guitar.

If you're serious about learning guitar finishing, I'd recommend the updated Stewart MacDonald book to go along with this video. If you're into building/finishing acoustic instruments, this video will definitely help you learn how to do it. I'd rate it a strong A.
I was quite disappointed in this DVD. I expected a video, but what this is nothing more than a slide show on DVD. I didn’t give it the worst rating because it has some useful info, but actual video would have gone a long way to make this more useful.
It was very good, I just wish it was real time instead of still picture. Over all I learned a lot.
An excellent resource for any luthier, with a lot of information on different finishes and techniques, although moving pictures would have been helpful in some areas.
Very good information. Very well presented.
Great video and highly informative. I learned a lot about guitar finishing
This dvd was a big disappointment. The information was pretty good, but I was really hoping to see things being done. Stills are just not the same, and I can read all the information in books and other sources on the net. Action would really make it a good dvd to learn by.
Good general information. Answered a couple of questions that I had. I didn't care for the requirement to page through the menu for each subject, but the slide format was useful if one wanted to pause and look at a particular technique.
I was rather disappointed with this video, I think mainly because it wasn't a video that showed the work being done in real time. It was, as one viewer put it, more of a slide show. That said, however, the video did have good info - what there was of it. It never ceases to frustrate me that the people who make videos break up the info into several short segments when one would have been sufficient if it had been made into a longer video; or as in this case just make a video with too little information on it. With videos costing as much as they do, we should be entitled to three times as much info on a dvd. Assuming that 3 would be average, when based on a rating system of 1 to 3 stars, I would give this video a rating of 2. I feel that it was just average and then I deducted one star because it could have had much more info.
Although not a video in the true sense (this is a collection of still photographs with a narration) the material is very well photographed and described by a guy who obviously knows his stuff. Highly recommended.
This DVD explains several different finishes and should be considered part of your finishing information knowledge base. The Stew Mac book is a must (if you can get pst them trying to sell you their products). I would suggest other DVD's and user forums like the kit guitar builder site. Robert also has a pore filling demo on the Luthiers Mercantile site utilizing drywall paste. This is a must have video, but make sure to look at others. Finishing (unlike building)is very personal and discovering your own preference and technique is probably the most difficult aspect. This DVD shows examples of several different finishes and viewing all (even if you plan on doing a different finish) is very informative. Don't buy any filler, stain or top coat without viewing this DVD first.
Are you kidding me!!!! This is listed as a DVD but it is really just a slide show with someone talking over it. There is no ability to really learn the physical process/technique of applying the filler of finish. might as well read the stewmac book Very disappointing not recommended at all. Again NOT A DVD just still shots of start middle end
