Developing the composition from several photographs, he establishes the transparent washes and works up to the application of thick paint, a hallmark of his oil painting style. Mr. Handell discusses the colors that make up his palette and technique of painting thin to thick with clean color. See how he uses both brush and painting knife to achieve masses of harmonious color and the suggestion of detail. Thinking aloud as he works, Mr. Handell explains his concepts of artist depth, rushing water and the elements of nature such as rocks, cliffs, and trees. This is an excellent video to experience Mr. Handell's approach to painting from photo reference in a way that makes the final painting unstilted and too detailed. He creates and maintains a rhythm of the subject throughout the process.
Another wonderful DVD from Mr. Handell. His years of experience and talent are apparent. I hope he makes other DVD's available, it is almost as good as attending a workshop.
Albert Handell handling oil paints is like Beethoven composing music. Much is knowledge and experience, yet so much is intuitive. This video was an awesome experience to watch. I was mesmerized, and inspired. Excellent.

Wow. This artist is phenomenal...I don't know how easy to duplicate, but I thought it was really worth seeing. He does speak very clearly and explain every move, but still, as he says, he is really seeing the big picture in his mind. The paintings are fantastic and I'd love to be able to accomplish the effect.
Well, turns out, I ordered the video in mid November and it came to our house while out of town on Christmas New Years Break. I did get to at least have two days watching it, but not enough time to actually sit down and paint with the video. He's quite a good artist and I liked what he did with the brushes and paint. Wish arrival times were a little more punctual, but guess that's the nature of this business.
This two part series is excellent. Mr. Handell is a real artist. At first my thoughts were "what in the heck is he doing". Then as he developed his scene I sat in total awe. Being a newcomer to painting I have enjoyed all the dvds I have rented but this shouldn't be missed.
You can't help but be awed by the magic of Handell's style. I would not consider this a beginner's video however. The step-by-step approach to teaching is not as clearly defined as some other DVD's, but wow! What a demonstration to watch. For some reason his palette is not outlined until the end, so before painting, it would be smart to watch the ending first!
I wish I owned this DVD because I would surely use it as a reference on a regular basis. Lots of good information about composing from several reference photos, adding interest, correcting what doesn't work and emphasizing the feel of the composition. Especially helpful was the excellent view of how he mixed his colors on his huge palette. It took 2 DVDs to complete this painting, but I feel like I had an entire workshop by the time he had finished. I highly recommend it. Connie M. Austin, Texas www.ekaweeka.com/568
