Plein air painter Kevin Macpherson develops this large studio snow scene from several small studies. He discusses his thoughts on color and composition, in depth, as he enlarges the studies. Learn how he retains the freshness and simplicity of the small works on a large canvas. During the painting process Kevin pauses for self critiques and shares his impressions and goals with the viewer. He explains the logic of his limited palette: color harmony, warm and cool hues, value relationships and techniques of painterly painting. Listening and watching Kevin as he paints this large studio work is more informative then viewing a live demonstration. The multiple cameras follow the action in close up detail from palette to canvas.

This is a superior demonstration. Kevin's colors are beautiful. His teaching skills equals his artistic abilities. Many good artists unfortunately can't relate their skills to others. Å wonderful job Kevin! Fran
Kevin has done another superb demonstration! His color sense is unequaled. Fran
This video was wonderful. I always learn so much from Kevin. I love his use of colors.
Winter Escape #1 is the better of the two demos. Kevin explains in detail how he arrives at the color choices and ideas to progress with this painting. The interviews were interesting, personal and filled with inspiration. Kevin gives of himself 100% in demonstrating brush work, color notes and val-hues. I highly recommend Winter Escape #1.
Kevin MacPherson is great no matter what he is painting. I rented disc 1 only because I thought that the picture on the website was what he was going to paint. Instead it was not a snow scene as the picture shown but a very colorful winter scene. He did a very good job but it was not what I thought I was going to learn about. The camera work is great as is his technique and color mixing ... well worth the renting but now I will rent the second disc wtih the painting shown on the site. I have asked Smart flix to show the paintings on each disc if they are different so we can choose the ones we want.
Winter Escape is actually 2 DVD's
The first is excellent except for that darn treen right in the middle.
The second gives excelent teaching on how to refine your painting to a mcuh higher level of light, color, and impact. Kevin teaches in a very coherent way that is easy to understand and gives you glimpses of his 20+ years of painting compelling images. He demos subtle color shifts between warm and cool that really enhance the painting.
Enjoy !
