He explains and demonstrates the complete process that he follows to create a pastel landscape. Bob begins with hard pastels to establish the design and color harmony. Next he scrubs the hard pastel with mineral spirits to create the undertone and begins layering with soft pastel. He explains how to see masses rather than line - and form instead of detail. See how to accurately simplify colors and values of the major shapes. I rented them all and I enjoyed them all. Each one has a little different approach to painting. I like the way all three artist began their paintings. Each artist prepares their painting surface a little different and I learned from them all. Each DVD talks about lost and found edges, perspectives, and color temerature changes. These are all very informative DVDs and I recommend them all.

Bob Rohm is a pro in front of the camera as well as behind it I think, because this video is very well shot, good closeups at various points. You get to see a painting from start to finish in almost real-time. I am new to pastel, and found Mr. Rohm's guidance specific when necessary, but also 'big picture' when appropriate. Very easy-going, conversational style. This guy can paint! I would happily attend a workshop with him - hope I can find one!

Even though my interest is not in painting landscapes, Mr Rohm's rendition of the landscape photo was absolutely phenomenal! He is brilliant!! and his information is excellent. His inspiration has touched me..might just try a landscape! If color, composition, pastels, and perception that is out of the box interest you then rent this video! It is so well worth it! Thank you for this one, too, Smartflix!

The DVD by Bob was very good, although i couldn't watch the last two chapters due a defect in the DVD, it was still worth the rent. Lots of great info.

The DVD by Doug was average in my eyes. The subject was boring and the painting style is not one I cared for. I did learn a couple tips and I always like to see how others work, so it wasn't a complete write off.

The last DVD with Albert Handell was great. Seeing how he starts and works with a watercolor underpainting was fantastic. I find it amazing that an area looks unfinished but then he adds a few strokes and BAM it just pops out. Great stuff.

This video is not for beginners. He knows what he's doing & creates beautiful artwork. But he appears to paint by well-developed instinct, which is hard to communicate. I would only recommend this to someone who is grounded in the basics and wants to cut loose & experiment.

I am a big fan of Albert Handell's work, so seeing him demo his technique was really great. It was a little disappointing in that he doesn't give much information re: why he does certain things. But you can learn a lot by watching him.

Not very good quality of tape. I would not recommend for a beginning pastelist as artist much too quick in applying colors.

Fascinating to watch Albert Handell at work. He composes a unique painting using elements from several photographs— difficult for a beginner to pull off— but he makes it believable. If you have read his book, this an especially valuable session to watch as the painting develops— something impossible to capture in print.

Doug Dawson has an almost scientific approach to painting and shows some good tips for sizing, cropping, and choosing color. Plus basics of perspective. Very helpful.
