nternationally acclaimed author and painter Kevin Macpherson is a natural teacher of plein-air painting .And no wonder, since he had a lifetime habit of painting outdoors. In his two-hour oil-painting demonstration Kevin tackles what he days many aspiring artists consider a problematic subject-a landscape filled with greens. The landscape in question is a wooded pond with a mountainous backdrop situated near his New Mexico home and, consequently, one Kevin has repeatedly tackled. Here the renowned artist uses one of his original on site studies to inspire and inform a larger, more finished painting. The results are glorious. In fact, you could say Kevin wrote the book on painting luminous landscapes because he literally did. His North Light publications, "Fill Your Oil Paintings with Light and Color", is an international bestseller. Whether through a book of before a live audience, Kevin;s communication style gets the message across clearly: When it comes to successful painting, there is no formula to be memorized but there are key concepts to be mastered. Few painters demonstrate these keys as authoritatively as Kevin does and all the more so because his delightful personality makes them easy to absorb.

Another bad video by Macpherson. His books are great, however, he just doesn't have what it takes on camera.
I am really surprised that the previous viewer did not like this DVD. I, personally, found it exceptional! I certainly preferred this DVD over his professional “Brush With Life” series. This DVD demo was painted before a live art audience. Kevin explains his limited palette, and how and why he begins with his shadow shapes first. We are able to see over his shoulder everything that he is painting. He answers many questions while he is painting. I would rate this DVD “5” lightbulbs! I would purchase this DVD if it was available.
I have to disagree with the previous review. I have found Macpherson's books to be a bid dry, but his humor in discussing his process of producing a large canvas from a small plein air study kept me engrossed in the video. Too many artists are not able to articulate the painting process in a way the viewer can comprehend, or deliver a rambling monotone discussion that is about as exciting as watching the paint dry. This is a video that I would highly recommend to understand the process of creating a studio painting that still captures the feel of plein air.
This is a really valuable video. McPherson completes the painting as we watch and we see virtually every decision and brush stroke. Kevin's running banter and response to questions from the audience are entertaining and helpful. I would buy this video.
Having to return this demonstration was like saying good-bye to a friend. It was one of the best videos I have seen. Kevin was at his best! Fran M.
I really like Kevin's easy way of explaining the thought process that he is going through when he paints. He is also fun to listen too. Some of the questions from the back ground could not be heard, so I didn't know what he was responding to. Rhonda
I very much enjoyed Painting a landscape from a small study and would highly recommend it. It was one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched. -Marla W.
Kevin is the best, my favorite style of painting, very interesting brush work.
This is an excellent demonstration of painting a larger work from a small plein air study. The pace is quite slow as this is a complete filming of a demo done for a live audience. This increases the value of the demo as the audience asks a number of questions which are answered during the painting. The demonstrator explains why he does what he does, along with what he is doing. Very competent instruction.
Extremely helpful for the beginning artist. Highly recommend.
I thought it was very good. I love Kevin MacPherson painting technique. I am so happy to have found a site that rents Painting in Oils. I look forward to renting more in the future. Sandra J. Booker
I would rent this again just to watch Kevin apply his color notes using a limited palette. I like being able to watch over his shoulder and also the mixing of his color notes and where he places them.
This was a great dvd. I only wish I could have seen more close ups of the original he is working on, and would like to be able to hear the many questions the audience asked. Maybe the artist should have repeated the question before answering it, for the benefit of those of us watching. Otherwise, it was a fine learning experience.
