Get ready for the ultimate do-it-yourself project: a battle-worthy handmade Japanese katana (long sword). In this one-of-a-kind video, Master Bladesmith Wally Hayes takes you step by step through the process of designing and building a Katana-Tac – a simplified tactical katana suitable for traditional martial arts practice or modern battlefield use. You will learn exactly how to design, profile, grind, temper, polish and haft your very own working katana using a minimum of tools and equipment. You will also learn some of the most closely guarded secrets of both traditional and modern-day swordmaking, including the construction of a low-cost charcoal forge and the exact process for Japanese-style clay tempering. Once your blade is properly tempered, Hayes teaches you how to polish it to reveal the hamon (temper line) and haft it with a traditional cord-wrapped handle. For information purposes only.

This DVD was very informative and usefull and answered a lot of questions.
This is an excellent video. I highly recommend it if you're interested in making katanas. It's worth the rental price just to see the straight blade develop its curve during the post-heat treatment quenching process. That was awesome!
I really enjoyed this video. Easy to understand. I can't wait to start my own Katana project.
I thought it was Fantastic. Absolutely loaded with a ton of information. If you fancy the idea of Katana making or sword making in general, you absolutely need this DVD!
Interesting but fairly lame. Annoying garage band sound track that plays over and over and over and over. Worth seeing but would not be my first choice.
This was an excellent video. He doesn't go into the traditional method of making a katana but his own interpretation is very good and will produce an excelent sword. I can't wait to try it.
I found the DVD to be highly interesting and complete in its content. I went right out and bought the materials and am in the process of making my own sword.
I very much recommend this DVD.
Not a BAD idea for DVD!! But, This video shows a cheap way to made a Katana by grinding one NOT hand forge as REAL one do!! Over-all good video!!
I was severely disappointed with this video. I was hoping for insight into the finer points of forging Japanese style blades and differential heat treating. Unfortunately this video focuses on making a stock reduction blade rather than a forged blade. The video didn't discuss producing different hamon and the fittings for the sword were far from those normally seen on a Japanese blade.
Good video! Would recommend to anyone interested in sword making.
A very good video, a tremendous amount of information to absorb.
Pretty good, as long as one isn't looking for the tradional methods. Well presented and shot, with lots of explanation.
