This is the companion video to “the blacksmithing bible", A Blacksmithing Primer. The author of the indispensable reference book appears in these videos, teaching the standard techniques that all blacksmiths must know to master the craft. This is a must-have for every blacksmith’s video library! You will learn how to organize your shop, build your first fire, hold and use your hammer, choose your stock, make tools for any job, forge weld, make scrolls, hinges, how to make animal and human heads and much, much more. Randy’s simple, straightforward and humorous approach to learning to be a good blacksmith is as much a part of these videos as it is his book. Shot and edited in the same clear, user-friendly style you have come to expect from Love of Art Productions, you will enjoy watching Randy demonstrate all the techniques close-up, just for you.

A very good video. Not just because it covers so many key basics you must know to do effective blacksmithing, but also because it covers them with enough patience and clarity to be practiced easily. Being a novice myself, I learned a lot and enjoyed it a lot. I suspect even an experienced blacksmith would find new information.
This is an excellent blacksmithing DVD for beginners. I found that blacksmithing methods were explained and demonstrated very well. I have done several blacksmithing projects and I have had a few problems but this video showed me where I was going wrong and I have learned how to make better projects in the future. The instructor did an awesome job as did the camera man.
I thought this video was especially good for beginners. Tooling and basic techniques are explained in detail (including how to build a coal fire-which is a lot easier to understand when you can watch). I wouldnt rent this video if I considered myself "intermediate".
This is a really good video for the beginning to intermediate smith. The photography is very high quality and the instruction is excellent. I did find myself saying out loud "hurry up and hit it" when the author would pull some hot iron out of the fire and proceed to talk for a while before starting to forge. Great value, well worth renting, probably more than once!
Good, great, fantastic!
This is a 3 disc set that fills ones head with tons of good stuff.
Well ordered and methodical.
For woodworkers or folks who like heat treating tools, disc 2 is well worth a rent.
An excellent, excellent video. I've rented quite a few educational DVDs from SmartFlix and this has to be one of the best I've seen. Some of them have good information, but lousy lighting/sound/narration/pacing. You just want to yell at the screen; "I can't see a damn thing!" or "Okay - OKAY - we KNOW that's how it works because you've SHOWN IT TO US A DOZEN DAMN TIMES in the last 10 minutes!!!" With Randy's video, I never once felt any of that. He kept my total attention, and whenever it seemed like he was belaboring a point, he would then show you _why_ he was emphasizing it. He has a good sense of humor, an unhurried and very methodical working style, and appears to be a master at the art of blacksmithing. I was on the fence about getting into this hobby until I watched this DVD. Now I'm shopping for tongs and an anvil. :-) HIGHLY recommended (and I'm not easy to impress!)
First rate! Just what it says- a primer. and it is all that and more.
