...with Kevin Macpherson

How-To Video: Kevin Macpherson Paints A Landscape by Kevin Macpherson 4_bulb Review this video!

Kevin Macpherson is a member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America and is a past President of the organization. In this video he demonstrates painting a large studio painting from an on location study. The video was filmed during a four national artist demonstration. Kevin is one of the nation's leading plein air artists. His ability to convey his skills to the audience of artists is fantastic. You are there as step by step he develops the painting from the beginning sketch to its completion. Through the use of this video you will have the opportunity to paint with the master plein air artist. You can setup your easel by the TV and paint with Kevin.

Great video - highly recommended. He starts from a small field study and creates a larger painting - he makes it look easy - it isn't.

Very informative, with a very nice explanation of the use of color temperature in place of value change. It's a worthwhile rental.

Macpherson is a master artist & this DVD really shows his skills off. The camera rarely leaves his painting or the palette and that allows you to watch the entire process. It was filmed in front of an audiance and he answers questions as he paints. The only problem is he makes it look too easy. Thumbs up!

If you have trouble sleeping, rent this video. Way too much dead silence and not much information. I was very disappointed.

I really enjoyed this DVD moreso than his other one. His very limited palette and process was very interesting. After reading his book this really helped tie it all together.

This is an interesting video. Kevin has a great sense of humor. He seems very open, and willing to share his talent and skill

Very helpful. The camera showed very clear and close enough.

Kevin is amusing to listen to and I enjoyed his teaching style but the production quality was lacking. The sound quality was really hard to listen to and there was so much glare on his palette it was hard to see the color.

Overall, the video is disappointing. Kevin spend too much time talking and walking in front of the camera.

Loved this DVD! Kevin is a master painter, and a wonderful teacher. In this demo Kevin explains everything he is doing, and why. We are able to see his painting strokes, and his palette as he mixes with his limited palette. I would rent it again.....higly reccommend this one! Better than the "brush with life" series, because Kevin is relaxed and responds directly to the camera and the art audience

Kevin was informative and demonstrated amazing dexterity with a brush.

Not most polished video ever - and yet well worth the rental price!

This is my first painting video, but this is my $.02 worth. I loved it. Macpherson is personable and funny. I love his book (light and color) and now I imagine him talking each time I flip through the book. His advice in the intro is real good. They shot this well so that you can see his palatte often. I also really like that he shows us a value study to emphasize the importance of keeping your shadow side and light sides separate. My only disappointment are that he couldn't talk as much while painting and that he didn't do a Macpherson "start" which he strongly advocates in his book.

I enjoyed this video very much. There is a lot to learn from Kevin's demo. Each time I viewed it I discovered more tips, not just listening but watching closely his handling of brush and pallet.

I enjoyed this video. Kevin is entertaining and is very easy to follow through his painting process. I particularly could relate to the correlation between golf and painting.

For myself, because I am legally blind, unless a teacher uses words to explain what he is doing, it does not work for me. I can see enough, but I want more direct explanations on what the artist is doing and why. Just to watch someone paint is not enough. This guy did not really teach, he just copied and asked everyone to follow along. I would like teachers who teach, explain and tell what they are doing and why. He did paint a nice picture but very littel insight was gained. However, there was another man, he was the guy from Ireland, he was not only helpful but actually walked you right along, told you why and showed you how and this was good. Even if you could not see, you could still learn by listening and this was good. Thank you, and in time I am going to offer a CD for the blind, on how to go about learning, and building your own tools to work with and so on.

I am very impressed by Kevin's application of color and the order in which it is applied. I have never seen anyone paint on the plastic coverings that he was using, but thought it a wonderful idea. I also loved the colors that he gets just using the primaries. He has a great sence of humor and keeps his small studio audience laughing. He gets quiet at the end as he is finishing up. Either the editor or someone there at the presentation put on background music. As a musician by trade, I got VERY tired of hearing Pachelbell's Canon in D 6 times. Please if you are going to give us background music play a variety. It is very distracting to hear the same piece over and over again! I have watched the presentation 3 times now, and love what Kevin says, but will have to turn off the sound toward the end. I just can't take it another 6 times.

He really nails value and color temperature -- pretty amazing to see! A good solid video and enjoyable presentation by what seems like a very nice man.

I was thoroughly inspired watching Kevin capture this landscape. It was his use of a limited palette and his placement of brushstrokes that enticed me to watch this DVD at least 3 times and each time I picked up something new. I will definitely look forward to viewing Kevin's other landscape DVDs.

What a wonderful resource for artists! It was as though I was actually attending a workshop. I picked up lots of painting tips. Thanks for offering this DVD.

This was a very informative video for me. Macpherson is the kind of teacher we wish we had had all through school. SmartFlix price is a bit steep for a rental, but much cheaper than buying the DVD.

There is no question that Kevin Macpherson is one of those great art teachers who generously shares his wonderful experiences with others who appreciate his works and his knowledge. However, I wish he had elaborated on the process of mixing up his pallette colors at least for this particular subject.

Even though he mentioned a lot of important issues in this video, unfortunately, he skipped other details that would have been very useful to know. Anyway, I still enjoyed his subject matter, his artistic approach, his artful brush-work, and above all his valuable comments to the viewers. Yes, definitely I would highly recommend this video to the art lovers.

This was my first encounter with Kevin Macpherson. Having heard so much about him as painter, I was expecting "the world" ! The DVD is good, no question about that. Yet, I have observed other painters whose approach to painting is not much different. I conclude, after viewing the DVD, that Kevin is not really that much better then so many other painters. I would suggest others to be open to so many others painter DVD's at SMARTFLIX. They are surely equal in instruction/practice to Kevin Macpherson.

Excellent DVD. Well produced and Kevin did a masterful job of explaining all the details artists are interested in such as what brushes he uses and what oil paints does he use. The photography was very well done as I was able to see the way he handled the brushes he used and great close ups. Would highly recommend this DVD and would also like to view any other DVD's that he might have made. He is a great plein air painter. Gerilyn

Very good except for the angle of the camera focused on the pallet which created a lot of glare and distorted the colors

I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a solid foundation in learning to paint landscapes.

I consider a whole book on art good if I learn just one thing I didn't already know. Kevin shows his approach is sound fundamentally and you can perceive the discipline. It's important that a student recognize that a teacher is serious both about his work and sharing insights.

I've been painting for about 6 months, and I found this video very helpful. I have decided that for me, is that it is better to watch the video, and then the 2nd time, turn the sound down and just WATCH what he does. I also bought his book, which is a great reference, now that I have seen him paint. My only complaint is that the sound quality is poor.
