He's a good painter and has a good discussion. My only problem with this video is the poor choice for subject matter. That shack isn't too inspirational.
I took an "in-person" workshop with Kenn Backhaus a year ago. I was interested in seeing this dvd since all through the workshop I kept thinking "I wish I could work with this guy all the time!".
Backhaus is incredibly articulate. He has a gift for breaking his subjects down into digestible sections that everyone, beginners intermediate and advanced painters can appreciate. The dvd was just like being in his in person workshop except that the workshop I took was five days instead of three.
The best part of Backhaus' instruction is his demonstrations. He can paint absolutely anything and he teaches you that if you pay attention to the fundamentals of art, use a limited palette, and observe what is really in front of you will be able to paint anything also!
If you want to learn to paint "directly" and from life outdoors you will want to check this dvd out. I hope that he will do more in the future.
Okay dvd about the basics. Im not sure what would have made this demo more interesting - perhaps a better subject - but i can truthfully say i was bored most of the time watching it. I agree with Beckhaus' wife that he talks waaaay too much. The talk is instruction and necessary, but i found myself many times wishing he'd just paint already! This is a hard skill to master - painting and talking (I can't do it) but if you're giving a workshop, being paid and done it a hundred times.....? He could have been a lawyer.
Boring! Too much talking not enough teaching!
Could have done all the teaching in less than 1 CD.
Good for the beginner, but not much there for the intermediate painter or professional. His choice of colors left much to be desired.
This DVD would be good for the beginner. He makes painting enjoyable and interesting. However there is a little too much talk.
I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to everyone who likes Plein Air painting.
Sincerely, Joe Boyles
This is a lengthy 2 disc session....sometimes tedious, othertimes OK. He does talk a good deal. Would it have been better to simply watch him paint ? Yet, a beginning plein air painter might benefit from his words. I'm sure a workshop with him would be better than watching a DVD made during a workshop. At least in a real workshop there might be opportunities for questions/answers along the way. The DVD displayed almost lifeless workshop participants. Yes, I realize that these DVD's require orchestrated time, orchestrated participation, the inclusion of specific artist insights, viewpoints, and beginning to end work of art. HOWEVER, this one was too long for what you finally viewed as the completed work.
Disc 1 was very interesting. I especially enjoyed the demonstration of the limited palette and the mixing of the colors. The artist seemed like he talked too much but everything he said was pertinent to the subject. It was like having a conversation with him.
Kenn is a brilliant artist, but this painting demonstration looked as though it was done by an amateur painter.
