1st Roll: Eskimo Roll For Sea Kayakers

...with Jay Babina

Canoe and Kayak how-to video: 1st Roll: Eskimo Roll For Sea Kayakers by Jay Babina 5_bulb Review this video!

Learning the Eskimo roll is every kayaker's dream from the moment they venture out on their first paddling experience. The idea of bringing yourself upright from a capsize is not only unique to the design of the kayak but remains one of the utmost safety skills that the sea kayaker can learn. "1st Roll" demonstrates a simplified approach to learning the extended paddle roll, which is the easiest style roll to learn for beginners.

Very nice DVD. Sometimes it shows people doing other kinds of rolls which can be a little confusing...I think it should use only the extended layback until the closing session where you could see where the skill can be applied in other types of rolls. This does not distract too much from the topic of the DVD however. The lesson progression is very good. I give it an "A."

A very good instructional on beginning rolling, showing techniques for early success. Done by the designer of the Outer Island kayak, now made in commerially by Impex.

As an experienced kayaker, I feel this is the single best video about teaching the roll. It breaks the roll down into understandable steps and the practice or 'lead-up' exercises are well established and explained. I felt there could be better underwater photography, particularly related to the paddle sweep, which is the roll's most important part. And possibly a sequence on how friends can help as one attempts their first roll.

I had learned how to do a roll, but this procedure was better then what I learned in a class that cost much more and took much longer.
