On this first of three DVDs in the Matte Surface rendering series, Scott shares with you the shading techniques he has been teaching for over a decade. Scott covers the necessary tools and materials, explaining how to use them. Next he explains and demonstrates the basics of how our brains interpret form via value changes. Scott uses observational video clips of a box in various lighting scenarios to reinforce his value assignment strategy. Walking you through several sketches, he shows his techniques for properly constructing the cast shadows of planar forms. The rendering examples demonstrate the use of pencil, chalk and marker. This DVD is intended as a “must-watch" for beginners and a good refresher for the more experienced artist/designer.

On this second of three DVDs in the Matte Surface rendering series, Scott shares with you the round geoform shading techniques he has been teaching for over a decade. He explains and demonstrates the basics of how our brains interpret round forms via value changes. Scott uses observational video clips of a cylinder, cone and sphere in various lighting scenarios to reinforce his value assignment strategy. Walking you through several sketches, he shows his techniques for properly constructing the cast shadows of each of the round geoforms. At the end of the DVD, Scott renders a more complex form (shown on the cover) from start to finish, demonstrating the use of pencil, chalk and marker. This DVD is intended as a “must-watch" for beginners and a good refresher for the more experienced artist/designer.

On this last of three DVDs in the Matte Surface rendering series, Scott shares with you the complex curved surface shading techniques he has been teaching for over a decade. He explains a logical and technical approach to assigning values to simple curved panels. Using Nupastel chalk and Vertithin-Prismacolor pencils, he shows various lighting strategies you can use to light and render complex curved surfaces of your own design. The curved surface examples increase in complexity by the end of the DVD, when the cover piece is rendered from start to finish. Finally, Scott demonstrates several quick vehicle value sketches, employing all of the knowledge learned from this series. This DVD is intended as a “must-watch" for beginners ready to take their skills to the next level, as well as a solid foundation for the more experienced artist/designer.

The quality of the DVD material and instruction is matched only by the SmartFlix service. Both are excellent, and I couldn't be happier. Thorough in both detail and explanation, I feel this DVD provides more knowledge and insight than the art school I attended – at only a mere fraction of the cost.
I can't say enough good things about Scott Robertson's techniques. No matter what your skill level is, I don't think you will be disappointed.
This DVD is methodical and deliberate in the best way. Step-by-step he walks us through shading and rendering, calling attention to key points that will make your rendering better and more compelling. I strongly suggest that you get some paper and drawing tools and work alongside Scott, to prevent yourself from nodding off.

You should rent this trio only after his 4 perspective disks, if not, you're getting ahead of yourself... unless your line drawings are already stellar.
