5 stars. Stopping short of heat-treating (he sends it out), every step of the way is shown, in all the details you ever want.

Plenty of DOs and DONTs.

This was a really good video. I learned a lot from this video. This was the only one I've seen so far that covered silver soldering, other than Chris Crawfords video on making a scale release auto.

Steve Johnson's "Making a Subhilt Fighter" is the best instructional knife making DVD I have ever seen. This video had been a big influence on me. The video is well produced and Mr. Johnson is very thorough about explaining everything he does. He describes and names all of the materials and tools that he uses and gives you fantastic tips and instructions non-stop. I think everyone should see this video, even if you are not interested in making a subhilt fighter, you will still pick up tons of awesome tips that you will be able to use for making other types of knives.

Making a Sub-Hilt Fighter with SR Johnson came in two disk set. Both disks were excellent. The first disk covered profiling and grinding the blade. Great suggestions throughout including the tapered tang and use of various grits of belts. Photography was excellent with only an occasional "hand" shot rather than subject shot. While Johnson makes it look easy, he talks about the difficulty in getting it right the first time. He makes errors and then shows how to correct them. I would recommend this video to any knife maker at any level short of Master. I've been making knives for four years and I learned a lot from watching how it is done rather than reading about how to do it.

This video has been dogging me since I sent it back. I would like to own it, as it has plenty of real-time information one cannot find in a book. Mr. Johnson has mastered a skill set which allows him to make things look easy. The video provided great information in an easy to use format. I watched the whole thing in one sitting and sent it back-MISTAKE!
