Learn to combine materials to create vibrant art with mixed-media artist Sean Dye. In this workshop you will learn how to layer materials in order to achieve the versatility of mixed-media without sacrificing long-term survivability. Sean shows you the tools & techniques for combining charcoal, India ink, acrylic gouache and water-soluble oils on the same canvas. For Sean, each layer defines a different aspect of his process: vine charcoal to define shapes; India ink to plot values; acrylic gouache to create a foil for the colors he places using the final layer of water-soluble oil. His final layer of palette knife water soluble oils establishes color and texture. Along the way he provides pointers on the use of each material, what to look for when purchasing paint and a few safety tips. Sean works from an oil pastel reference painting.

If you are wanting to try Water Soluble Oils & paint with a palette knife, this is the DVD for you. Sean is a great teacher, he explains in detail what materials he uses from brushes to supports. He goes slow, it is very easy to follow what he is doing. I have his book "Painting with Water Soluble Oils". Water Soluble Oils are great if your going to paint plein air. They are wonderful to take on vacation because all you need is water. This is a long DVD, so you will need to watch it several times & take notes, because he covers a lot of ground. L. Clare
This dvd gives great detail on using a palette knife and I did learn a lot. The painting that Sean does is too abstract for my taste. I would prefer to see a palette knife used in a more realistic landscape. The information that Sean gives about toning and under-painting with gesso and gouache was worth the rental.
Over all I liked the video very much. I have been looking for videos on knife painting for a long time. I thought Dyes painting with the knife was very informative with watching him use it over several time, I thought his method of using mixed media was very useful. I did feel the painting itself ended up a little busy. S.J.B. South Carolina
