In this workshop Mary Todd Beam takes a playful approach to everyday items, discusses composition, layering materials, making it personal and keeping it creative!
Mary uses the folk art of garage sales as a venue to learn about design and finding the extraordinary in the everyday ordinary! She teaches one of her many creative approaches to separating out the design elements, simplifying the subject and then making it your own using painting skills, in contrast to drawing skills. She shows layering the colors, progressing from the simplified line drawing, texturing the surface, transparent acrylic and finally opaque acrylic and again line work. Catch her enthusiasm for the process and discover your creative self!

Excellent presentation! This will get your creative juices going. I have worked from her terrific book "Celebrating Your Creative Self", but seeing Beam create a painting from idea to finish is a pleasure. Be sure to keep watching at the end when the credits roll for a personal look at the artist (and her cat).
I enjoyed this video a lot! I shows a step-by-step creation of an abstract painting using fluid acrylics.
The title attracted my attention! As an artist who uses "found objects",stronglybelieving in "recycling, reusing & re-purposing", I'm always up for the off-beat and unusual.
This DVD did NOT disappoint. Instructor got into composition, contour lines, color layering and she has a sincere, humble approach to her work.
I was both entertained & informed! A painter for 35 years, I do need inspiration and new ideas to "refresh" and re-focus.
From this DVD, I've translated the basic ideas into my own smaller format (ACEOs) Art Card Edition Origianls and the results are exciting.
Would certainly recomend this DVD for any artist, beginner or advanced, who needs a little push in another direction.
Happy painting!
I loved her "Celebrating.." book but was disappointed in this video The color quality is poor, and there needs to be more explanation of why she is doing what she is doing as she composes. There are also sections that are really slow ( covering matboard with gel). I would not rent this again.
The video is put together very well. Mary is not only a great artist but also an effective teacher. I learned a lot about materials, composition, and layering of color.
I love Mary Todd Beam, but this particular rental was too slow and drawn out. Interesting to a point but I would not recommend this one. Sorry.
