Liliedahl Video Productions spent a full week in Dan Gerhartz’s studio filming the entire painting process of this beautiful work. Painted for gallery sale, the painting recently sold to a private collector. This is not the typical demonstration painting seen in workshops. It was painted over a period of four days, and Dan spares nothing in his commentary to explain the reasons he paints in the manner he does. Dan receives countless invitations to teach workshops around the country, but his gallery and show obligations prevent him from scheduling more than one or two per year. To be able to reach the painters who want to study with him, but can’t, he filmed these videos in answer to that need.
A warm and giving instructor, he offers more than a workshop in this program, where he is able to paint at his own pace in the familiar surroundings of his spacious studio and local models.
If you have ever wanted to look over the shoulder of a master painter and see the model he is painting, this is the video that will allow you to experience that desire. Take a visual tour of his studio and the environment in which he paints, and you will feel as if you are there during the entire creative process.

I just finished viewing this video and thought it was wonderful. I learned so much from watching this artist. He details everything he does and I can see in my newest painting how much and effect he has had on me. Great video with lots of great techniques.
This is one of the best oil painting videos I have ever seen - and I have watched a lot. If you have any interest in portraits you should watch this. It is quite long because he shows you everything he does. Highly recommended.
I'm an illustrator and new to oil painting. Most of the classes I've taken don't offer much instruction. This video series is wonderful from setting up the painting to adding details. Dan shows every step and explains what he's doing. He is a great painter and instructor. I have a much better understanding of the painting process. I highly recommend this video series.
I did rent the DVD but did not realize there were more than one DVD to the paining. Even though, I would recommend the rental, just make sure you have a full week to study the DVD and rent one DVD at a time even though there are 2 or three to the set I would not recommend getting them all and trying to study several within the week. It is a fraction of the cost of purchase and also a good review of the product in case you are thinking of purchasing and not sure if it is a worthwhile investment. This enables you to review before purchasing if that is your goal.
There are much better videos out there. This one suffers from a lack of preparation and organization on the artist's part. He stumbles and falters so many times, I ended up fast forwarding out of frustration.
Great video and I recommend it. Dan's work is fabulous and his instruction style is easy-going, honest and complete.
Do note that reviewer John D. claims: "He stumbles and falters so many times", however this is simply not true. Dan does not do this, although he does decide at one point the face isn't correct and wipes it out to correct it. This happens once only.
And a DVD of a different reknown painter ends with the painter giving apologies for why his nude did not work out very well.
Much better to make the change when it is needed, as Dan did. Dan's work turns out very well in the end.
If you read this review Dan, thank you for providing this great insight into your world and your artistic techniques.
I've rented Dan Gerhartz' Portrait video which was excellent. This video was the opposite. He does the wash, a basic charcoal drawing and begins, just begins, to paint the shadows on the face. So short it was difficult to put into context and it seemed to end just as it was beginning. First in a set of four but by itself its fairly useless. Didn't learn anything.
Absolutely the best video I've seen, a portrait and a still life in one video. As those of you know...as an artist it is very difficult to articulate and paint at the same time. Dan did his best and I loved the video! His works are very similar to that of John Singer Sargent.
Dan Gerhartz instructional DVDs are very insightful to me. It is already reflected in my own paintings as I watch and really listen to the great artist. He seems to me far more sensitive to color temperature, able to describe form through varying cool and warm temperatures within the form itself. I've gotten a great deal from these DVDs. They are invaluable. Though I will watch other artist's instructional presentations, there is something magical about Gerhartz's "wet-in-wet" alla-prima approach, letting the rich color of the painting almost speak for itself.
I found this series by Dan Gerhartz to be incredibly valuable! I learned so much being able to "watch over his shoulder" as he took this complex painting from start to finish.

This dvd is good, I highly recommend it.
This dvd is very good, the complete set is worth watching, he is very generous with his knowledge.
I have watched the first video three times. I think it is VERY interesting and I picked up quite a few tips from him. I don't find him distracting. I think he has a typical "artsy" personality that is not dry and methodical. Consequently, his work is very fresh and unique. I plan to get the rest of them.
This is a very good DVD and Gerhartz is a wonderful Sargent like painter. He doesn't paint very much in the first DVD so rent the first two together. He uses a simple pallet which is very logical when you see him paint. He constantly puts his fingers in the paint which I think no one should do. Gerhartz is good at telling what he is mixing and he tries to describe what he is thinking. The DVD is totally unedited so you really feel like you are in a workshop watching. The viewer has the same view of the model that Gerhartz is painting which is really nice.
