In The Studio With Sherrie McGraw: Still Life With Onions

...with Sherrie McGraw

Painting: Oil how-to video: In The Studio With Sherrie McGraw: Still Life With Onions by Sherrie McGraw 5_bulb Review this video!

Join Sherrie McGraw in her grand, spacious studio in Taos, New Mexico, for an informative and moving experience as she brings this composition to life on canvas. Sherrie is an articulate and sharing instructor, as well as an accomplished painter, and this is a rare opportunity to see her complete an original composition in her own private working space outside the workshop venue. She offers the student of still life painting a wealth of ideas, concepts and direction for informing their own work, and shows how to paint, in her own words, "a little bit of something, and a lot of nothing" and create a stunning work of art.

I highly respect Sheri and the quality of her work but watching this DVD was difficult. I bought it in hopes of learning but found it to be uncomfortable due to the way that Sheri seems to find beginner's so amusing and it lacks any generosity of spoken practical information/direction in painting. It was visually beautiful but I almost did not buy it since the last DVD of her's that I watched was the same way. I felt cheated at the end. I would spend my time and money on someone like Burdick or Silverman that can give information and paint at the same time without it seeming so painful.

Sherri McGraw is a very accomplished artist, a beautiful woman, with a beautiful studio. As she herself requested, the video was artistically created with only the natural north light her historic studio was designed to provide.

This lesson is not designed for beginning painters. I would estimate that it is for advanced intermediates, and experienced painters.

For more easily accessible information, I would recommend any Johnnie Liliedahl own videos designed for beginners. They are clearly created with a great deal of thought, well scripted, and illustrated. While they are not "glamorous" they are the best sources of good solid traditional information in an understandable presentation that I have found.

Watching this video is like having Sherrie McGraw paint right in front of you. There are plenty of closeups as she lays the paint down on the canvas and her pallet is always shown as she reloads her brush. I recommend this video if one learns by watching other artists as they work.

First let me say that I do not think this DVD is for the beginner. Having said that, and staking my claim as a serious artist, the DVD is excellent. Sherrie's instuction and demonstration have seen me well on my way to painting still lifes. I am a plein air landscape painter wanting to come indoors during the winter months to paint some of the time. I had tried painting still lifes before but did not achieve a painting any where near to what I envisioned. Having seen Sherrie's paintings, I wanted to learn to paint like her. While I'm certainly not there, I am well on my way thanks to this DVD.

This DVD of part 1 and 2 was excellent. Sherrie does a realistic still life painting in this DVD and is so very thoughtful during the entire process. YOu hear what she is thinking as she very slowly contemplates the set up and begins to paint. She paints very slowly and the brushstrokes are beautiful. Her color sense is exquisite and the lighting is dramatic. This was a beautiful painting and executed with perfection. She tells you what she is doing almost every step of the way. The camera work is wonderful. Don't miss it if realism is your thing for a still life. Carol L.

Wonderful instructional video, but probably better suited to those who are already familiar with the basics of painting, if not more advanced. Sherrie McGraw is exceptionally talented in both her art and her presentation. It was sheer joy just watching her process of seeing and interpreting her vision into paint. I can imagine that beginners would be totally lost in the subtlety of her palette and emphasis on conveying the flow of light. She is not just "painting objects", and her color choices do not follow "formulas". But for those wishing to observe a master and learn from her lucid (and humble) comments, I highly recommend this video series.
