ilming the execution of this beautiful, large landscape painting developed from a small field study. Scott is a knowledgeable and generous teacher who holds back nothing in the explanation of his working process, and you will experience the feel of his energy and single-minded purpose in addressing this large painting, while listening and watching as it comes to life in his own studio on the blank, white canvas.
If you have ever wanted to look over the shoulder of a master painter, this is a video that will allow you to experience that desire. Take a visual tour of his studio and the environment in which he paints, and you will feel as if you are there during the entire creative process.
This painting video is a must see for every landscape painter.

Scott takes one of his small field studies and paints a larger gallery type painting from it. I purchased this video before I discovered TVR and I still think it was worth it. He spends a lot of time discussing values and color temperature. He uses a limited palette of colors. If you like landscape painting and enjoy paintings that do not use overly bright colors you will enjoy this video. Highly recommended.
Very interesting, as Scott takes a different approach to landscapes than most other artists I have seen and read. He does not tone his canvas, painting on the white canvas with a rough sketch of the composition. Then, rather than the usual block in of various masses and working from large to small, Scott starts with putting in the darkest darks, regardless of the sizes of the shapes and masses. His approach of using the three primary colors and by pre-mixing a number of muted tonal values from the primaries and from a few premixed grays was very interesting. It would serve those who want to develop a more muted, but harmonious effect in their landscapes. Scott is very thorough in his explanations and exposition of what he is looking to achieve as he paints and even corrects certain passages. A five star video for those who want to learn something new and unique in technique.
This video is long, you better set aside a whole weekend. Lots of technical information a little bit drawn out and Scott fails to finish a sentence before he starts another one. Overall great video, instructor is intelligent and you can see a lot of his techniques used as he paints. Great painter.
This video goes through three really good landscape paintings, so it's more bang for your buck. His landscapes are somewhere between impressionism and realism. Good rock and cloud painting. Highly recommended for landscape and plein air painting.
While an obviously successful painter, check out the lovely home and surroundings, I found this dvd boring: much too long, drawn out monologue, and very little of technical use. It seemed repetitious as well. I actually fell asleep watching! Sorry. Didn't learn a thing except one can buy and use an empty tube to fill with paint.
Interesting video, although I agree that the delivery is monotone. I had been considering attending one of Christensen's workshops, but for almost $1300 for a 5-day class of 40 students, thought I would start with his video instead. Obviously some of the techniques have changed - rather than mix and use a warm and a cool mid-tone gray, the workshop now requires you to purchase Scott's proprietary formulas of premixed colors.
All-in-all, I'd recommend renting this video set, learn from it what you can, and move on to other landscape demos with perhaps better instruction. Its always good to see how various artists develop their paintings, then pick which techniques best apply to your own style.
Scott Christensen is a disciple of the finest thinking in the painting of landscapes, small or large. He is part of the great tradition of shape painting that realizes a more monumental whole...although the video drags a bit, the pieces of information and "thinking" are well worth the waiting and listening! You are getting an "IN" to the thinking process of painting a landscape usually only available in expensive workshops...what a bargain!
This wind-up to the first demo disc is a continuation of seeing Scott Christiansen finish his large landscape. Predictably the art is wonderful and he is masterful in his showing the step by step process, even though the verbal drags a bit. Great for any landscape artist who wishes to improve techniques!
Very valuable information and deftly demonstrated.
If you are serious about painting, this is a great instructional dvd. Highly recommended.
A good painter indeed but not user friendly as a teacher. I am still at lost
A good painter but not a good teacher. I still am puzzled.
Yes, I liked it very much, I learned much from it and would recommend it to others. E. Bush
...An extremely good video....packed with info.JM.
Scott Christensen does a masterful job of showing you how to make a large painting from a study. He imparts useful information and the video is very well done. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he is one of the best artists we have today.
The second disc is even better than the first as you get into the nitty gritty of painting the large landscape. Scott does a great job of explaining every step of the process.
Although Scott Christensen is an excellent painter, I cannot say the same about him as an art instructor. He is a very poor speaker, talking in fits and starts that made me edgy and nervous in the beginning. Then as the DVD played on and on and on I got so bored I kept nodding off. He took sooooo long to mix a little patch of paint for each color that would appear on the painting - I had to fast forward through that part. In fact, I found myself fast forwarding through many parts. I would recommend you rent Richard Schmid's DVD's instead. He is an amazing artist and a fantastic art instructor! Buy his books, too!
Video was nicely done. He doesn't have a big dynamic personality. Interesting to watch his style.
Video was nicely done. His studio is beautiful. I would have liked a little more out of the DVD. You learn his style. He's soft spoken and looks like he feels self conscience. His work is beautiful.
I learned so much watching this video and have incorporated many of his processes into my own way of working. A must see for both the plein air and the studio painter. He deals with some more advanced ideas, and doesn't talk so much about specific color mixes, but more about the ideas of how to approach a painting. I find that so much more helpful than the sky made with Cerulean and Burnt Sienna discussion most art teachers give you. Not sure if it's for the beginning painter, but definitely for the intermediate one. I actually found him more personable and down to earth than Richard Schmid, who's work I love, too. His personality seems more subdued and he doesn't need an entourage surrounding him. I still recommend Schmid's videos as well. One little bit of information from anywhere can lead to a big breakthrough, and you never know where it will come from. Mine came from a Ken Auster workshop and this video.
This is a beautiful snow scene, and I did learn a lot from watching it. Scott Christensen is a great painter who uses a minimal paletter achieving beautiful colors and perfect harmony. I got tired of his long explanation in DVD #1 almost as if he had felt nervous, talking on and on. Maybe he could have abbreviated his lecture, but this was only a personal impression. However, things got better, and I liked DVD #2 a lot better.
I don't think I can handle the Mixing of puddles of colors outdoors like Scott Christensen does. He does it so easily, the shadows would disappear,..good video on mixing and pulling!
What a revelation!
The part where he goes into what a LIE it is that a novice painter should go out there and just stumble through 100 paintings to get better...! Really?!, without any concept of design or rudimentary ideas on how to see things and without knowing that translating a scene onto the canvas is more than just copying the colors your untrained eyes can barely notice, yet alone capture? Oh, save yourself a lot of grief and just get this DVD set!
He is so clear, relaxed, and sure-footed in his explanations of how to execute a large painting.
Order it before you get any more instruction and you will be able to see what is going on from a keen vantage point!!!
He goes at this subject like a very well-educated cowboy. What more is there to say? I signed up for his next workshop and I already know I can't afford not to!!!!
Wow...what a great dvd...I had already watched the "3 Landscapes" dvd, where Scott painted 3 plein air paintings...this was in the studio and completed the teaching....Wow....how cool to take basically a workshop in my living room...thanks...Linda W
I found this entirely interesting and informative. I recommend this for seasoned painters who are searching for guidance in progressing from plein air studies to a larger product. Scott Christensen has obviously worked hard and is willing to share his knowledge. You can tell that he has great respect for the traditions of painting while charting his own course. It's academic so if you are looking for quick answers and tricks, this is the wrong DVD. It was refreshing to hear him discuss the harmony of colors and warm and cool applications. He quotes Carlson throughout so, if you are familiar with John Carlson's book on landscape painting ~ you will relate. This is almost like seeing a video of an artist demonstrating Carlson's theory and technique.
