You'll see how getting a lot of "brush mileage' provides the opprotunity for experimenting and problem solving without investing days in a single painting. Get a close-up view as Craig demonstrates brush work, pulling strokes and color mixing, selecting the right quantity and viscosity of paint for his brush. Watch the progression from line (the sketch) to form/mass and finally to texture and light.

You will see professor of illustration, Craig Nelson, CAC use his quick studies approach to develop a portrait of an in-studio model in a logical manner from a line drawing to a beautiful three dimensional portrait. Craig discusses/demonstrates lighting, preparing the painting surface, developing a ghost drawing to a final drawing, color selections, blocking in skin tones and hair, subtle adjustments to achieve lifelike flesh, when not to refine your strokes, delicate brush work for successful hair plus much more. Craig talks about all his decisions as he paints. You will learn where to look for details, touches of strong color and value that add energy to your portrait. Craig's Quick Studies approach helps you gain confidence to paint larger, more refined portraits after many of the basic issues are resolved in the quick studies format.

A no-nonsense,swift and clear presentation. Good for the beginner and an interestisng reminder for the more advanced.
Liberating, inspiring, motivating. Quick studies is an excellent concept and Craig Nelson is an extremely generous instructor. The picture within a picture provides all the information you need -- making it a pleasure to watch.
Yep, Craig is a master at covering the basics of quick study art. He breaks down the steps so that one can chart their progress thru the painting without getting lost in detail prematurely. Good for beginner/intermediate level painting students.
Great video for beginners or intermediate. Lots of information and the video itself was well produced.
Great video with helpful insights into oil painting. Craig makes painting look so easy. My process and my work has improved as a result of watching this dvd.
Helpful. I wish the model did not have a beard.
I really enjoyed this series, the first I rented from SmartFlix. Craig Nelson provides an interesting and lively commentary as he paints. I was engaged and interested from beginning to end of both DVDs. They're edited enough that it doesn't laboriously record every single repetitive brush stroke but you still feel like you're not missing a thing.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Both the visuals and the commentary were very well done and were never boring. It was great seeing the way he did the initial drawing and made the corrections to it and the way he painted the light and the features. Great video! Jana <http://www.janabouc.com>>
Nelson is a fine painter, and his ease with the palette and brush is evident. I found this an extremely valuable DVD for the chance it gave me to watch a painter who knows what he's doing at work, manipulating hues, color masses, and WORKING.
Superb chance to watch a fine painter at work.
Helpful and entertaining. Lots of useful information.
I enjoyed this video - to me it was completely worth renting.
The most helpful aspect of renting this movie (for me) was watching someone else work through the process - books help but watching helps even more.
I enjoyed this video and learned a lot from it. I believe his ability to do beautiful & loose quick studies comes from years of experience. It would be very hard for a novice to do the same. Still, it was very helpful in that it can help you loosen up and work in a more painterly fashion.
I enjoyed this DVD very much. Craig Nelson is a very good portrait artist and did a good job of explaining what he was doing, how and why.
Craig Nelson has good technique and passes on his easy going method on this DVD. Anybody interested in widening their portraiture skills will enjoy Craig.
Excellent service from SmartFlix.

I enjoyed watching this video lesson with Craig Nelson very much. It got me very inspired to try some quick oil studies like this. I do recommend it.
This movie was quite educational for me. I enjoyed having the option of stopping to review, and of watching it over again.
This was a very good DVD - two projects -- and Craig really shows you how to approach a quick study with oil paint -- I loved the saxophone player in the leather jacket -- very interesting to see how it came together.
I learned a lot from Mr. Nelson. It was not only informative, but also very interesting to watch. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to further their painting education.
A good demonstration of the painter's "quick studies" technique, focusing on a dramatic, sculptural handling of light and color on the features of the face. Craig has a nice, loose approach.
Both of the Craig Nelson vids were great.
