In this watercolor workshop, Vol.One, Chee discusses his Taoist philosophy and how it has influenced the development of his five distinctive styles
The underpinnings of all his techniques reside in his philosophy. This DVD includes Chee describing his artistic principles and collecting resource materials. Cheng-Khee Chee paints an active street scene. The first half of the video workshop Cheng-Khee discusses how he creats the scene using combined reference materials. He develops and transfers the painting onto the large-size paper, expresses emotional content, use of strong color and brush work and blocks in large areas, working toward detail.
In the second half of this watercolor video workshop Cheng-Khee Chee analyzes his painting and makes bold adjustments to create a cohesive, strong design with activity and atmosphere. He explains his rationale for each of his actions. This process has been described as: Chee uses his heart in the first half of the workshop and his mind in the second half.

Cheng-Khee begins with no preconceived idea of his end result. He knows only that he will paint Koi. You see Cheng-Khee begin his painting with the right brain qualities of emotion, risk taking and intuition, while applying pre-moistened pigment to saturated paper. While the paper is still moist, you see Cheng-Chee lift out shapes and add form to the scene, using his left brain to analyze his painting, rationally incorporating design principles and his thorough knowledge of Koi. This is a tour-de-force of a modern master.

An excellent series for the very serious artist. An artists dream to have someone so knowledgable and be able to express all that goes into a successful painting adventure is a rarity. I thoroughly was impressed, and as a teacher myself it is not that easy ,so many teachers are no more than classroom monitors. Watching and learning, Cheng Khe Chee was pure joy. thanx, BJBJORK.

Interesting watercolor instruction, with a unique method for wet into wet technique. Explains in detail how he finds his subject in the mass of color. Very enjoyable training.
It was very helpful to actually see Cheng Khee Chee painting instead of just reading about his techniques. I love his work and I think it will help me to grow as an artist.
The saturated wet technique was very helpful. I was able to see how much pigment he applied and his methodology with this technique. I hope to practice it soon.
His work is VERY briefly introduced and then we are subjected to a long boring interview Don't waste your time on the first DVD in this set.
I loved this DVD. What beautiful work Cheng-Khee Chee does. I am raising five large Koi of my own and can't wait to start painting them. Cheng-Khee makes it look so easy.

I agree that the first DVD is not what I was looking for; it was lecture and more suited for a book vs. how to do video.
The 2nd DVD did present an interesting demonstration but beyond a beginners skill set.
The marbleizing and monoprinting dvd was outstanding. He thoroughly explains his process and materials. It's like finding pictures in the clouds. I can't wait to try it.
