I got this one thinking it would be based more on gunstock bedding with various epoxies than anything else and was quite surprised to learn just how involved undertaking a project like this was. The majority consists of a lot of metal lathe work and milling and I confess to those elements of machining to being over my head. That said though I did find Darell Holland to be an excellent instructor very clear on what he was doing and the tolerances he was trying to acheive, if you know how to work with machining equipment and use dial indicators and micrometers than one can easily build one of these as he is very specific as to what procedures he is using and their measurements.
I think this video would be useless to anyone unless they were not only an experienced machinist, but had already completed several rifle building projects and were just looking for more advanced tips or better procedures. The video quality is generally good, but there are no graphics, diagrams, or charts to emphasize any of the points. Holland is obviously an expert, but the pace of information is incredibly fast. Terms, tools, components, and procedures fly by with little or no explanation. Because of the very fast pace and general lack of explanation, this is more of a demonstration video, rather than instruction.
You must have some gunsmithing under your belt to get the full value from this video. It will go WAY over the head of a beginner. Lots of info and how to on v-block stock work.
Great tips on wringing the best accuracy out of a Remington action rifle!! This is not a beginners video, but has some great information that will still be helpful in high accuracy rifle shooting. Great tips on bedding, quality machine work, and new rifle break-in. I really enjoyed this video!!
I thought that this was an excellent video. Darrel Holland always seem to do an excellent job in explaining what he's doing. You should keep in mind that this video is aimed at the gunsmith with a metal lathe. There is also some work demonstrated on the milling machine to inlet the stocks. It shows some unique methods of accurately bedding actions (Remington 700 series with some non-visual references to the winchester model 70) and definitely shows the professional touches that make for an excellent rifle. I thought that it was a nice touch at the end of the video that he actually shows what the gun he built will do at the range. That said, I would highly recommend this video.
Very good video on assembling a precision rifle. If you ever wondered what is needed and how to machine for a precision rifle I would highly recommend this video.
Being an amateur gunsmith i thought it was right to the point but for the unknowing it left a lot to be desired not enough detail.
While this is a good video there was just to much condensed. I will be building a Remington 700 rifle soon and I found this to be lacking details. Blueprinting was ok, but barrel chambering was too brief, and is covered more in another DVD. Bedding was useless for me as he uses his proprietary v-block system. I would like to see closer tolerances for lathe set up. Steve Acker's "Building a Target Rifle" looks better (4hrs) as well as Gordy's barrel chambering.
All in all well worth $10 for a few tips learned.
