Building A Chopper Chassis

...with Ron Covell

How-To Video: Building A Chopper Chassis by Ron Covell 5_bulb Review this video!

See a chopper frame built before your eyes! Ron Covell goes through the entire process, starting with an overview of frame design, explaining the concepts of rake, trail, and stretch.

He covers the use of chassis jigs, then goes on to show how to bend and fit tubing to create a chopper frame to match any design. Ron’s clear and detailed explanations will help any builder get on the road quickly, with a minimum amount of wasted effort.

He also shows the use of both entry-level and high-end tools for layout, cutting, and bending. With the excellent instruction found here, building a frame may be an easier project than you imagine!

Well this must be an extremely popular video because TVR had a waiting list on this one, I've been assured that they now have additional copies.

Well I just got this the other day and I can say that it was well worth the wait. As usual it's Ron Covell does a great job of teaching an interesting subject. I really like the way Ron not only shows you how he does things with his commercial shop environment but also how you can do the same thing with more common tools.

If you're interested in how to build a frame than this is a great video and you won't be disappointed. Ron really does a great job showing you the process and explaining the why not just the how. One thing about the video is that you will see a frame being built in a commercial environment which isn't what most of us do-it-yourselfers are going to have. For one the welding jig he uses is a commercially built unit, I don't know about you but I don't have that kind of money to throw around for a frame or two, but as with everything else Ron does tell you about some alternatives.

All in all it is a great video and I've already watched it twice. I'd also recommend Ron's video on making gas tanks to, that's another great video.

I love the way Ron teaches. I've watched (and now own) every one of his DVD's. However, this video was a little disappointing to me. Ron starts off extremely thorough as always explaining tools & jigs and then moves onto notching and bending tubing with very detailed description and demonstration. Up to this point the video is absolutely excellent but then I felt like I hit the FF button on my DVD. When it time to get into the intricate detail of putting everything he just taught you together and building the actual frame he goes into very little detail. This is very unlike him. I wanted more. Over all the video is definitely worth watching but where is part 2 ?

One of the most useful videos I've rented. The instructor was clear and to the point. He explained the workings of the Frame Jig and the geometry in a way that made sense. After watching this video just one time, I was able to build a Motorcycle Frame Jig just like the one on the video. Thanks Guys. James

This one is a little dry, but it is probably about the only video you will find on the subject and he does a good job in explaining it. Also, he goes through and uses expensive equipment, like mills, that you probably don't have and then he does the same thing with tools you probably do have or could afford to get. Take note this is a hardtail frame and he doesn't go over a softail.

I really enjoyed this video and think I will probably purchase a copy. Really nice to see how to layout a chassis like this - lot's of little tips. I also enjoyed the fact that he shows how with multiple tools for those of us who don't have a mill etc. A few things are glossed over like the mounting plates for the transmission, motor etc, but I guess it's the kind of thing covered in the plans he is working from.

Really nice to see how it's done. Clear & concice, they give you multiple ways to accomplish the same thing, great if you don't have a big shop at your disposal. Not what I would call an easy project but, but it is a nice easy video. I like ALL of the Covell videos I have rented so far. Also like his books.

Be warned, if you’ve ever toyed with the idea of building a chopper or maybe a light steel tube vehicle this may push you over the edge. The content only covered making a basic frame but it had some great advice and web links. I particularly liked that they showed a number of way to cut and shape the tubes. Shaping methods covered high end methods with a large mill and ball mill to hand power tools.

Great video - Ron shows how to do each step with specialized tools AND basic hand tools since not all of us have fully-equipped machine shops but we still want to build choppers.

This is a good video in that Ron shows multiple methods\tools to accomplish the same task. It wasn't my favorite video I've seen from Ron but it does contain some useful information.
