Getting professional results safely and efficiently
Nothing transforms a room, old or new, like a beautiful wood floor. And with the choice of flooring and rental equipment now available, there's no reason you can't install your own wood floor. In this video, flooring expert Don Bollinger installs oak strip flooring in his own home--complete with uneven floors and walls--showing you step by step how to get professional results safely and efficiently.
By watching Bollinger you'll learn:
* which types of flooring you can choose from
* how to remove old flooring and prepare the subfloor
* how to use power nailers in tight places
* how to establish a baseline and lay out your floor
* how to lay flooring around awkward spots like hearths and heating ducts
* how to allow for seasonal expansion of the floor boards
This video is the companion to Bollinger's video workshop, Sanding and Finishing Hardwood Floors. In addition, both tapes are paired with Bollinger's book, Hardwood Floors, where you'll find techniques for laying, sanding and finishing a variety of hardwood floors.
Don Bollinger is the owner of The Oak Floors of Greenbank in Seattle, Washington. He teaches workshops for do-it-yourselfers and is a contributor to many magazines, including Fine Homebuilding.

The video gives basic idea of what's involved in the installation process, but rather thin on technical details. Two things that I wish were covered better are using the nailer (I have found the nailer needs to be fitted with a shim to work with thinner planks) and laying initial row, especially along non-continuous walls.
I found this video helpful although slightly lacking in detail
This was a very well-done production. Don Bollinger does an excellent job of discussing the various types of wood and shows how to properly lay and nail the floor planks. By showing his installation of hardwood floors in an old house (his...with warped decking, gaps, misaligned walls, etc.), he explains how to accomodate for a large variety of problem situations. I especially like how he discusses the various tools required and their use.
This DVD gives a good overview and enough detail to do a good flooring job. It covers many key points with the flooring that would easily be overlooked by a novice. These points will prevent future problems with the flooring, some that would be costly. A few tricks are also presented to the viewer. Therefore, it was well worth the rental fee.
