How-To Video: The Essential Character Modeling & Animation by Todd Grimes 5_bulb Review this video!

Head Modeling

Discover professional organic modeling techniques for creating the character's base head object. Explore subdivision surface procedures

that speed the organic modeling process. Apply the most useful tools for sculpting the geometry and insuring proper flow for accurate

shading characteristics. Master the most effective modeling techniques & time saving tips for creating any organic character model.

Forming the Hair

(about 164 minutes)

Body Modeling

Continue the character modeling process by creating the character's body. Using the concept art as a guide, begin with the torso geometry and work through the

entire model. Discover concepts that can easily be applied to any character animation project. Follow along with the artist as he takes you progressively through the

creation of a fully modeled character body ready for rigging.

Model Rigging

Before you can begin to animate a character model it must first be rigged. Start by building a virtual armature that will allow you to bend and twist your character into any

position. Apply time saving techniques for managing bone selection. Incorporate Weight Maps to control deformation attributes. Perform deformation tests and correct

problematic areas. Add Inverse Kinematics for complete animation control.

Facial Animation

Apply the time honored traditions of 2D facial animation in the world of LightWave 3D. Create phoneme, eye & brow morph targets for lip sync & facial expression.

Break down the dialog track using a dope sheet and apply lip sync techniques to bring the model to life. Give your character personality and charm by combining morph

targets for eye & mouth movement to achieve the perfect expression and attitude.

Body Animation

Discover the techniques that enable you to give the character attitude & motion. Apply traditional techniques like squash & stretch, anticipation, exaggeration & secondary

action for full character motion. Plot the dope sheet to set up key positions, then clean up the flow of inbetween frames. Incorporate facial animation into the overall scene

to complete the animated sequence.

Very good series. The trainer was very clear and easy to follow. The format is great because it takes you through the step by step process of modeling and animating a character. I started to do the videos creating the character that he was presenting. About half way through, I scrapped that character and followed along with him again while creating my own character. The DVDs are broken into sections so that you can easily jump to different sections as needed. If you are new to modeling, you should at most only rent the first two videos to start. There is a lot of information covered in the first video that would make it hard to reveiew and use in only a week. This series is a must rent for anyone interested in character modeling and animation.

The DVD was great. It offered a lot of information and went at a good pace. My daughter is getting so much out of these tutorial DVDs, much more than the college that I am paying good money for her to learn computer animation. All she has to do is see it done for her and she can remember it, maybe the instructors at her university should keep that in mind.
