...with Larry Haun

How-To Video: Framing Roofs by Larry Haun 5_bulb Review this video!

Practical methods for efficient roof framing

In Framing Roofs, Larry Haun and his brother Joe build the roof of a basic 1,600-sq. ft. house. Starting from the top of the walls, they take you step by step through the entire process, showing you practical ways to organize tasks, streamline procedures and handle tools and materials efficiently.

Here's your chance to watch a framing master at work, and to become a better, more efficient carpenter yourself.

Each section of the video covers a specific topic in detail. You'll see firsthand how to:

* frame a gable roof
* use a simple system for framing intersecting roofs
* sheathe roofs

The companion book to this video is The Very Efficient Carpenter.

Larry Haun has been a production framer for almost 40 years and a teacher of apprentices for almost 25. He has honed his skills and techniques on hundreds of tract and custom houses, finding countless ways to save time, reduce costs, minimize problems and improve quality.

Well if you could not tell from my other reviews I kind of like this old guy. Very instuctive, illustrative use of models to demonstrate roof pitches, parts and how they are calculated. Shows easy ways for determining angles for two intersecting roofs. For clarity, maybe should note that the rafters he uses in this video are not the prebuilt factory truss type some may be familiar with today but are instead the common type with ridge board. This was an excellent series from Taunton Press and one of few that I actually bothered to buy

Watch 2 old, grizzled pros frame and produce general high production woodwork. Thorough, it comes across like a video for a college carpentry program and is based on the book, "The Very Efficient Carpenter". This is the old school approach: hammer, nails and strong back. Though not a carpenter, I imagine nail guns and other time saving technology are much more common nowadays.

Very thorough. Covered many, many finer details that easily could have been left off. Larry Haun (correct spelling and name?), the host, took a lot of time to have the details right.

He did skimp on the wrap-around front porch roof yet I feel the saw cuts may have been complicated enough to warrant a separate video. I only offer this opinion as a non carpenter and non roofer.
