Spinning & Weaving how-to video: Introduction to Weaving and Looms by Deborah Chandler 5_bulb Review this video!

Introduction to Weaving

This video introduces you to the tools, yarns, vocabulary, projects, types of weaving and equipment that will help you choose a direction that is just right for you.

You learn how to calculate & measure yarn quantities needed, and wind your warp using a warping board, an essential ingredient to all weaving, & one you will refer back

to often as you continue to explore weaving.

This video serves as a prerequisite to all other weaving courses for those of you who are new to weaving

(about 82 minutes)

Rigid Heddle Weaving

If you've always wanted to weave, but don't have space for a large floor loom, this is a great way to get started. Betty will amaze you with what this small, inexpensive and

very portable rigid heddle loom can do. She guides you through two warping processes and offers tips and techniques as you weave a beautiful wool scarf.

Finishing techniques, including washing and fringe treatments are also presented. Then you weave a set of cotton placemats using pick-up sticks to create different

weave structures. Pick-up pattern instructions are provided on the written insert.

"Introduction to Weaving" is a prerequisite to this course unless you know how to calculate & measure the warp.

(about 93 minutes)

Beginning Four Harness Weaving

You begin by measuring the warp on a warping board and then you'll warp the loom from front to back. You will learn how to read a weaving draft (pattern), how to tie-up the

loom (direct tie-up), and how to weave a number of different weave structures from the pattern draft that is provided. You will explore plain weave, basket weave, rib weave

with one and two colors, several twill combinations and the basics of doubleweave.

(Note: If you have not woven before, "Introduction to Weaving" is a prerequisite.)

This is truly an introductory video for the beginning weaver who has not yet chosen a loom. If you were given a loom and you know nothing about the various types of looms you will benefit from watching this video. If you have some familiarity with weaving and already have your loom this may not be the video for you unless you are interested in learning more about the various types of looms.

Great video for the beginner! Betty Davis, a master weaver, also has a great book on the subject "Hands On Rigid Heddle Weaving", which makes a perfect accompaniment to this video. Betty's instruction for this simple yet versatile loom very easy and straight forward. While the set of the video is slightly dated, the technique and loom structures haven't changed. This video will benefit a user for ANY brand/make rigid heddle loom. The construction of currently produced rigid heddle looms are very similar (if not identical) to the Beka and Schacht used in the video. Looms currently available range from vintage Erica looms found commonly on eBay to the curvy Kromski Harp and the Knitter's Loom from Ashford. A new weaver does NOT have to spend $200 (or even $100) to get started, as many very affordable used and budget level looms are available on the market. Watch the video, weave-along, and best of all - Get Warped!
