Bowl Turning

...with Del Stubbs

Turning how-to video: Bowl Turning by Del Stubbs 4_bulb Review this video!

An introduction to turning beautiful bowls and plates Del Stubbs shows you how to turn beautiful bowls and plates. You can start with dry lumber or with green wood you cut yourself. The camera zooms in close to see the careful contact of edge on wood and then moves back so you can study various tool positions, grips and stances. You will learn about: cutting tool types and modification of standard tools, grinding and honing chisels, gripping various turning tools, mounting bowl blanks and roughing out the shape, modifying a standard lathe, controlling warp in the thin wall of a bowl, cutting into endgrain, and designing bowl forms.

This is a classic video and a terrific place to start learning the art of wood turning. Del is a great demonstrator--very folksy and down to earth. He demonstrates a wide range of skills from sharpening to design to turning, as well as modifying a lathe to improve its performance. Del's mastery of thin walled turning is amazing and very well illustrated in this video. Camera angles and lighting are all good and effective.

True, there are lots of things this video does not demonstrate--spindle turning, platters, hollow forms--but, it is a good in-depth view of face plate techniques for bowls.

If I have any criticism of this video it is that it is becoming a little dated. For example, Del demonstrates a sharpening/honing technique that might have been totally hip in 1986, but no one is using it today.

Minor faults aside, I highly recommend this video, especially if you're a relative new comer to the craft.

When it comes to turning skip this one. It is by far the most bloviating, uninformative DVD ever. There is more valuable information in 1 minute of Richard Rffan's DVD's than in this 2 hour farce. Not for anything but I don't know how they produced this. It should have been entitled All The things you shouldn't do in bowl turning. I was looking for info on plates and saw plates in the description. The only plate shown was a very simple plain drab one that was finished. Most of the time was wasted on chit chat and very little instructive technique of any value. PASS THIS ONE UP. I truly feel I wasted 2 hours of my time watching this let alone the cost of the rental.

This was the very first bowl turning video that I watched and would put it up there with the best. I would definitely put this video first. Del Stubbs gets right into the core of the matter and comes at the subject from every angle that I can think of. Jam-packed with very useful information, the viewer should come away with very useful information. This is one to be watched 5-10 times at least.
