Vessels of Illusion

...with Trent Bosch

How-To Video: Vessels of Illusion by Trent Bosch Review this video!

Trent takes you through the process that he developed and refined throughout his woodturning career. He takes you from the wood lot, to the bandaw, to the lathe, through the carving and woodbending process, revealing all the procedures he has refined through explorations of these techniques.

The vessels of illusion are just that. . . an illusion. To create the bowl-inside-of-a-bowl illusion, Trent turns and finishes the "outer bowl".

He then turns what amounts to the top inch or two of an "inner bowl" from a wood that both bends well and looks good with the outer bowl.

The "inner bowl" segment is turned thin and in some cases, several are made to allow for breakage.

Getting the the "inner" inside of the "outer" is accomplished by employing a wood-bending technique. The inner piece should be as straight a grain as possible and turned following the grain. Trent then boils the turned insert in water and Amway liquid detergent to make it flexible; he then removes it from the hot water (using gloves) and bends and forces the piece into the opening. Next, he inserts a balloon into the insert and blows it up and keeps the balloon filled with air for about two weeks.

Finally, he glues the insert in place. The illusion is complete!
