A very interesting look at how a "pro" mixes using Pro Tools. The special effects used to make the production look "hip" are over the top and distracting, but if you record with a DAW setup this is definitely worth watching.

I recomend this to anyone who mixes audio. Even if you do not use pro tools, their are plenty of concepts that you will be able to use from this.

Although it is "over-produced," this is a very good DVD about audio mixing - especially for folks who are already familiar with mixing and the terminology associated with it. For beginners, it may be a bit overwhelming, but then again, you have to start somewhere!

Definetly worth the rental. A lot of very useful pointers. Not really for the 'n00b'.

While much of this feels like an advertisement for a bunch of digidesign plugins that I will never be able to afford, the techniques are what I was interested in. I was looking to learn more about sonic landscape and what frequencies to reduce/enhance to give every track it's place. Charles Dye gives a master class in exactly that. As commented on before, the new-agey, zen-mindset garbage was totally lost on me but the core of the presentation was superb. I highly recommend.

While a lot of info was presented the video was very distracting. There were too many special effects on the video. While some plugs in were discussed and some techniques were discussed, the videos assumed that you were very experienced in recording and spent a lot of time on stupid history of the evolution of analog to digital....

What a fantastic resource! Charles alternates between talking about mixing in general terms (how to approach a mix, things to think about, analog vs digital, etc...) and thoroughly examining one specific mix of a rock song (all of the tracks, all of the plugins, all of the automation, and most importantly "WHY" he did what he did).

This DVD set isn't meant to be "this is how you should mix," since the whole point of music is creativity and finding your own voice. Instead, this is a seasoned pro saying "this is exactly how I mixed this particular song at this particular time, and hopefully you can gain some insight that you can apply to your own mixes."

Particularly valuable is the fact that all of the session files, complete with the original tracks, and all of the plugin settings and automation is included for you to pick through, analyze, and experiment with! This is absolutely fantastic. Being able to go through an entire song, track by track, and hearing what it originally sounded like, and listing to the effect of each and every plugin and how they shape that sound, how was each track panned, what tracks were doubled, how does the song evolve as it progresses from one section to another.

No matter how much you know about mixing, there is something you can learn from this set, in fact, I would say that the more you already know, the MORE you can learn!

Excellent DVD Tutotial about Mixing your song. Charles Dye provides detailed explanations of his decisions for using certain plugins and why they are placed in the plugin chain in a particular order. He gives instructions on instrument space and frequencies for absolute

I think anyone that's a novice or sincere about sculpting their mixes to listening quality should rent this DVD from SmartFlix.

Thanks, SmartFlix, for making it available to rent.

While the information contained in it was good, the over the top production was very distracting. In-between examples and the jittery video shots were unnecessary.

Overall the info was good - even if you don't own pro tools.

Having read about this release on forums, I was expecting a lot from this DVD and I wasn't disappointed - very informative and well produced.

Part two was better than part one, but the in-between distractions were a bit much

Have only seen part 1 so far. Too much artsy shooting techniques vs real, useful information for my taste. The info in the 1st DVD could have been presented just as effectively in 1/2 the time. I'm very glad I rented it instead of buying it at ~$100!

I think this one of the best dvds on mixing that I have come across. Sure its a little quirky in areas and it could do with out the 80's video fx. That can easily be over looked to absorb the knowledge of a new school style professional audio engineer mixing strictly in the box. I believe every body at all levels of mixing can learn something valuable from this flick.

To much glitch and not enough info. The info that was presented was fairly common and didn't go into any detail. Way to much self-indulgence for my taste.

At this point I have only seen the first DVD of this set and awaiting the 2nd DVD. I have to tell you I have been a fan of Chrles Dye from some of the papers and information published on his website. I am also a fan of his MILAR forum. I actually have been getting a decent sound from my mixes and am always trying to improve. I can say that the theory discussed in this DVD is solid and makes very much sense. I love how he explains how to mix analog and digital gear to get a pleasing sound. Most people think the cleaner the sound the better. This is not the case. Psycho acoustics plays the biggest part in how great a mix sounds and music must have character. There is such a thing as to clean of a sound. Charles explains this in great detail and advises how to get the character and warmth needed to mix a "record". ---- I am a recording engineer from Miami Florida also and this DVD is one of the better tutorials I have ever seen.

Offers a few good tips for those who can afford all the high end plugins used by Charles Dye. Dye focuses more on the theory of mixing rather than showing you how to actually mix, also wastes way to much time with special video effects and environment changes. If your looking for a good "how to" dvd this is not for you.

I could do without the psychedelic filler video stuff, but I'm just being picky. To have 'insider' info on what plugs to use, initial settings and why to use them is pretty invaluable. Be sure to have a notebook and pen handy!

AWESOME!

I've read articles, books, and magazines for years searching for this information. Charles does a good job of communicating the "hows" and "whys" of his mixing style. This works because he is continuously showing each technique along with before/after audio comparisons. Books can't train your ears like this.

Good job, Charles. I'm going to buy this as soon as I can afford it. It's deep enough for repeated viewing.

To be honest, I've studied this whole mixing process a lot. This really could be my experience, but I wouldn't pay $150 for this like it costs brand new. I WOULD pay the $25 to rent both disks, though! What a bargain!

The video talks a lot about theory, so if you don't know much about mixing, this can make your life 1000 times better. If you DO know about mixing, it's an interesting watch, and it's cool to see how he shapes his mix, but the actual techniques come from experience. He hardly says specifics within the plugins he uses, but he does talk a lot.

It's a good rent for $25. DEFINITELY get it. But don't pay $150 for it.
