This video tells you everything you need to know about studio configuration, with an eye towards having the right setup to do recording right with hard disk recording tools like Pro Tools.
Whether you're a musical or voice artists, or an engineer, or just an enthusiast who wants to look behind the scenes, this is a great video course.
Jon Kagi is the host, and he not only shows you how to set up a studio and work with talent, but he actually records and mixes several tracks using the hard disk editing tool Pro Tools.
When you're recording and mixing, you're going to face a lot of different challenges: guitar (acoustic and electric), drums, bass, male and female vocal, pianos, synthesizers, and violins. This video shows you how to work with ALL of these. Whether you're recording and mixing Jazz, Rock, R&B, or something else, this video will give you the skills you need to do the job right.
In addition to John Kagi, these other experts make appearances: Jack Endino (producer), Scot Charles (Emmy-winning mixer) and David Miles Huber (you may have read his book "Modern Recording Techniques"), Bob Reardon, Mike Soldano, and others.
If you want to improve your skills in recording, editing, or mixing, this DVD delivers the goods.
Note: This a newest version and replaces the title Pro Recording and Mic Technique.

I was expecting a basic "how to" on digital recording and what I got was an extended infomercial plugging a host of recording-related products. If you're up to speed on ProTools and want to find ways to beef up your sound this might help, but if you're looking to acquire some theoretical knowledge that will get you up to speed this is a waste of time. The fact that the demo song they constructed with these tools was in the big-hair pop metal genre probably added to my annoyance. I think I'll be better served by Roger McGuinn's DVD.
Not for beginners. For seasoned Pro Tools users. Advanced topics and equipment advertising but good. Worth the rental!!
