Always seeking the beauty in the natural world, Dan Gerhartz captures the effect of two light sources on the model, one warm and the other cool, in a sensitive portrayal of one of his favorite subjects, his model Bud. Painted from the live model in Dan's personal studio, we see the affectionate interchange between artist and model that produces the warm, sensitive expression on the model's face.
Painting under these circumstances, with competing light sources and a lively model, Dan handles these challenges with the aplomb of a master painter. And even with this heavy load of visual information to process, he is able to articulate his thought process and give direction to the painter/viewer that will inform their own painting efforts.
The subject of backlight and competing light temperatures is one that many painters never tackle, due to the sheer magnitude of visual perception it requires. Dan gives succinct and understandable direction to the viewers that will encourage them to try this effect for themselves.

Great tips for painting portraits. A bit long though.
This is a high quality video with lots of close ups of both the portait and the palette. Dan paints this portrait entirely from life, guiding you through his portrait painting process. He has a painterly style, using daps and strokes of color to model the form rather than blending and smoothing. There are lots of useful tips - the less advanced you are the more you'll learn... just watching him work on his palette made things click for me. As a bonus for those who haven't painted a person from life you also get to glimpse the nuances of interacting with a live sitter to get the best portrait. I'm renting all his videos based on this one.
Excellent video. Dan emphasizes creating volume through the use of warm and cool temperatures while staying in a particular value range. The videography is very high quality, focusing on close ups of the canvas as well as panning to artist's pallette with each new paint mixture. I would highly recommend this video to any artist, both beginner and professional.
Enjoyed and learned from the DVD set, Dan has great low key style.
Very well done. Dan does a good job at explaining what he is trying to achieve and the filming is great - lots of cuts to his palette to show what Dan is doing...highly recommended!
I got really inspired from watching Dan do this portrait, and learned alot from the DVD. I consider it an exceptional portrait and extremely well filmed. Dan Gerhartz' instructions and commentary was very helpful.
Great Painter, Great demonstration! You can't expect more!
Dan's understanding of value, construction, lighting were excellent. His ability to see shapes and place them with accuracy is powerful. His palette, however, was a mess, disorganized, wasteful of paint, kept corrupting his clean paint and had many distracting nervous ticks His finished project however.....beautiful! I would not recommend this to new students, too confusing, messy and difficult to follow.
