Rebecca Fire Lit: Portrait in Backlight

...with Scott Burdick

Painting: Oil how-to video: Rebecca Fire Lit: Portrait in Backlight by Scott Burdick 4_bulb Review this video!

Scott Burdick is known for his bold, lush figure paintings of native peoples in faraway places, many of whom are painted from sketches and photo references from his treks around the world. To keep his painting acuity at a high level, he continuously works with the live model in his studio, from life.

The painting of "Rebecca Fire Lit" was done in the studio of his wife, artist Sue Lyon. The pose was set up to illustrate the interplay of color temperature from opposing light sources, one a hot red-orange and the other cool sky-blue. Always the articulate instructor, Scott leaves no concept unspoken in explaining the subject of color temperature, with emphasis on what determines whether a color is warm or cool, how and where to use it.

I loved this portait on Scott's website and it was a treat to watch him paint it. He's very painterly, something I aspire to yet can't seem to achieve. This video helped me better understand what he's seeing and how he's portraying it. His discussion of warm and cool light was very educational, as was his use of color, moreso since the model was shown very often during the video. I was suprised by the amount of reworking Scott did on the face - not scraping off and repainting, but coming back and adding to or painting over small areas again and again as he refined his vision. It was very unexpected yet very encouraging. What I found most beneficial was seeing him work on his pallette.

This is a very good video for more of the intermeadiate to advanced painter. Scott likes to use lots of paint and lots of rework until he gets what he wants, he is a living master and a lot of good information on color and brushwork is presented. He easily admits that some of his paintings just don't work and he paints over them, nice to know that masters like him can also have paintings like that. This one is absolutely great though, very nicely done.

Scott Burdick paintings are among the best but to watch him paint Rebecca is exhausting. I'm glad to have been able to rent the DVD instead of purchasing it because I've always been curious about his technique. I'm no longer curious and am looking forward to rent some others.

It was really helpful to watch Scott move the paint around. I was interested in watching his touch. It worked for me.

This is a beautiful painting of a girl facing light on her face coming from a window in front of her, and a red light from behind her. The effect of the red light shining on her red hair from the back, contrasting the cool light on her face makes for a truly marvelous painting. The only minus on the Rebecca Fire Lit, discs #1 and # 2 is the constant talking that Scott Burdick does; it annoyed me to a certain extent.

Was greatly disappointed with this DVD. Scott executes a great finished product, but his process is a mess. His palette is a mess, he works everything over and over because he paints over the work out of habit? It was frustrating to watch. Jene Rizzo
