This video offers a great substitute to a workshop with Scott, as it is as informative as the program he would offer in such a class. With limited time to satisfy his gallery and invitational exhibition commitments, Scott is not available to teach as many workshops as students would like. This is a superlative alternative to studying with Scott.
Unlike workshop demonstrations of three hours or less, this painting was produced over several days' time, and is approached from the viewpoint that it is gallery-bound. Scott is careful to explain what he does differently in his own studio when the pressures of a workshop are not a factor. We all want to know how the greatest artists "really" paint when not pressed for time. This video is the answer to that question.
A world traveler, Scott has captured the indigenous costumes of the peoples of the world and has become known for his compelling figure paintings of the peoples of China, Nepal, Thailand, and now.....Peru. While he often paints small sketches or draws these subjects on location in these exotic places, his major works (like this one) are painted back in the comfort of his studio from the considerable library of photographs that he and his wife (artist Sue Lyon) take while on these trips.
This video shows how Scott works from one set of photographs to complete this striking painting.....and how he selects the information from the photograph for his reference. As a painter thoroughly schooled and practiced in painting from the live model, he offers constructive advice on how to apply that knowledge to original photo references in circumstances where painting from life is not possible.
Scott is a very verbal, articulate instructor, and this video is completely filled with his valuable commentary & instruction from start to finish. It will be a classic that should be in every aspiring painter's library. Order your copy today, before the pre-publication discount offer expires.

This video is fine art at its best. Mr Burdick is definitely a very skilled artist and instructor. With that said, I find it difficult to paint as thickly as he does. I love great detail and I seem to have to use less paint to get it. I did really enjoy the videos. I consider myself an intermeiate artist. Arno
I've been in awe of Scott's work since viewing his Peru paintings so I jumped at the chance to rent this set and see one of them created. It was the wisest chance I've taken - I enjoyed every moment of this video and learned a lot too. Scott uses and discusses a variety of techniques in painting this work. Large and small brushes, palette knife work, long broad strokes and short thin ones, loose and tight passages, it's all there and more. The video is superbly shot, with crisp closeups of both the canvas and palette as he works but more distant shots that show how the painting pulls together as he talks. A big bonus - Scott paints an amazing background and a large stunning swath of fabric. I'd rent the set to see that alone. You can't go wrong with this set, it's Scott's best video!
This is a good video set. My style is more realistic than Scott's, but I did learn a lot from him. He is a great teacher, and very informative. The DVD set is very well done.
Wonderful video because it was chock full of information, thoughts and inspiration from the experiences of by Scott Burdick along his artistic career. Since I am in the process o f setting up my first "dream"studio as an addition to my house, the introductory specific advice about the studio set-up was priceless! Overall it was also very helpful in letting novice as well as more experienced artists understand that the problems, doubts, joys, and vagaries of the life and painting experiences of an artist at the easel is universal. In addition the time spent by Mr Burdick expalaining his specific and unique techniques and being able to watch him apply those techniques over a two day period had much more educational value for me than the usual "quickie" demo rushed through in a couple of hours.
I love this workshop! Wonderful artist and instructor. So much information. This presentation is worth every minute I spent with his art. Thank you Scott!
Very good video by Scott Burdick. Demonstrates the process of a completed painting from photo reference, rather than just a quick demo. Scott goes through his entire thought process in narrating the video, plus quite a few tips on painting and studio set up in general.
A very informative and well produced video in which the viewer is given an excellent view of Burdick's palette, his mixing of color, and his application of paint. He stresses the importance of drawing, values, edges, and color. Well worth renting.
I really enjoyed the video but it is rather useless on it's own so make sure you order several at a time as all four of this series are on the same painting. I especially liked the information regarding his studio. I am going to order the rest of this series next week.
This rental was well worth the money. I would consider myself an intermediate level oil painter who is trying paint a little more thickly, and the whole thing was useful to me, and, despite being 4 disks, not boring. It is like getting a workshop for the price of a rental.
I ordered the first two videos together, and have order the other two, which I am waiting on to arrive. I thought these videos were very instructive...I liked very much how the introduction covered all the facets of setting up a studio. I wrote that down for the day I'm able to set up my own studio. He is also a wonderful teacher. I'm a novice, with some background from college days when I took art classes, but basically am starting over. He taught me a lot of new information in regards to the important things to know when you're an artist. I relish it all...and need to practice it all intensely. Wrote all that information down as well. He mentioned his teacher, Bill Parks, who sounds like a fantastic art teacher as Scott imparted many important principles from his teachings. I wonder if there are any instructional videos out there by him? Scott has such an "easy" technique with his brush...I was captivated. Mine is rough, jerky, still new born, so it was frustrating that I couldn't imitate his hand. However, I realize that comes with practice, so will try to be patient as I practice. His ability to talk on topic and work at the same time is masterful. Thank you, Scott, for all your invaluable information...I look forward to the next two videos. Thank you Smartflix for being there with this service! What a great idea...you done good!

This video is a continuation of "Peru 1", and all the things I mentioned in my review of that video, hold true for this one. Great service guys! I am sooooo happy you're there.

Another great video by Scott. The first two were very informative. This third one was also packed with new ideas for me. Am looking forward to the last video.
Thanks to one and all!
The video was very instructive, and his technique is so interesting. I was fascinated with how he could get a portrait accomplished with such large brushes and loose technique to start, then the finishing technique which brought it all together. He is interesting, very knowledgeable. A good artist and good teacher. I would recommend these to anybody interested in painting.
I'm impatiently awaiting Peru Colors: 4. The first three DVDs have been impressive. Informative. Enjoyable. Enlightening. Simply great!
I didn't like it, so I didn't order videos 2,3, and 4. The camera stayed on Scott as he was explaining his studio setup. Why wouldn't he show pictures of his lights and other details as he went along. The name of the video is "In the Studio with ". Besides that I don't like his style, maybe the name should be painting SA Indians as done by Scott Burdick or something.
This DVD is well put together. The beginning has a long section on studio organization and ideas as well as a general pep talk about motivation and subjects. Watching Scott use his colors and brushes is actually very interesting for those of us who do not get to work in a studio with other artists. Looking forward to the rest of the series being delivered.
Really good with full of insights from a top artist.
His videos are very interesting how he applies the paint. It is so traquil watching it I would have to keep coming back as the disk are long. It wasn't boring information but he has such a relaxed way of doing it. I thought of the most important point he made is putting cool to warm in same color. It just is so impressing how a warm tone white beside the cool white put the zass in the highlights.
It was hard to stay with it as it was long but I enjoyed what he taught. I recommend it. His colors are beautiful.
These are fantastic videos. My wife and I rented the entire set of four and could not be more pleased. My wife is an experienced painter and I am very much a beginner, but we both agree that watching Scott work all the way through this painting in real time has been the most instructive art experience either of us has had. His relatively loose style for the background really compliments the somewhat tighter work on the face, and both work very well. I'm sure we will both work more confidently and have a lot more fun with our painting as a result. Our highest compliments!
Scott does a great job giving all levels of artist a broad view of his thinking, as he produces a portrait from a photo. His thoughts about studio settings, lighting, palette and many other artist concerns give you food for thought if not answers to your problems.
Enjoyed it a lot. My painting of women of Peru is better now from having seen it.
