Excellent series. I've been sculpting and pulling plaster molds for years, and have been curious about silicone, and pulling highly detailed molds.

He covers making a scaled down monster head, and also a scaled down full body sculpt.

Well, this seven DVD set goes beyond the basics, and answers just about every question you will have about sculpting, casting in plaster and silicone, and pouring the final cast in resin.

The only thing that bugged me about the production was that a bit could have been edited out. On the other hand, a lot of videos won't show you everything; this one pretty much does, in painstaking detail, sometimes.

To sum it up, this set is well worth your money. If I actually had the money to purchase these, I would, but they are on the pricey end of the spectrum.

The DvD on Maquettes offers a facinating journey through the process of building up an "anatomically correct" scupture from the base of an armature.

Watching the scuptor work from broad abstract shapes toward final detail was inspring if not educational.

As a beginner I likewise appreciated the prelimary explainations relating to tools (how they are used), clays, etc.

I look forward to viewing other dvd's in this series as I have the time to do so.

Well worth viewing!

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers, these are excellent DVD's but they really could have done a little more editing. I love to sculpt and I love all the detail they showed but I fell asleep twice while trying to get through them. I think the background music on some of these disks just lulls you off to dreamy land.

This service is GREAT! There is nothing like it anywhere else. It is the website I have wished for. The delivery was quick, e-mail communication to the staff was also very fast, much faster than other web companies that you might try to communicate with

The character sculpture dvd was excellent, and several friends and a couple of fellow students from my bronze casting class chipped in and asked me to keep it a while longer so they could come over and watch it several times. They were impressed with the website and the the types of videos that TVR has available, and several of them said they are going to rent videos from you. I'm only sorry that I didn't find you earlier Thanks for providing a much needed service for artists and craftsman alike.

This video was part of a series of six or seven videos about sculpture...The one that came first was using armatures which was appropriate if you plan on doing figures that should be supported..The demonstrations were excellent and easy to follow...I learned alot from viewing this video...can't wait to get the rest of the series.

Both the character sculpture and Maquette videos are chock full of information that can be used by sculptors across the board, and in any medium. Totally recommended!

very good techniques explained meticulously. I wanted to work in a way smaller scale so I have to modify a bit the materials he used

John Brown's series is the best that I have seen. Beginners have big problems with armatures and mold making in addition to understanding basic anatomy. Brown handles it all clearly and makes most operations far simpler than most beginning sculptors can suppose. His snap-away armature demonstration is a classic. If I had seen his demonstration on utilizing foamcore and other simple materials to make box molds years ago, I could have saved frustration and money. Highly recommended.

Excellent series. I found the information extremely useful in mold production. I've made silicone molds before, but had never had the specific details of how to properly construct mother molds. I just finished my first mold using these techniques and the results are fantastic. I have to agree with one of the previous reviews that said that some of it could have been edited down, but hey, there's a fast forward button for a reason, too. I'd much rather be faced with too much repetition and detail than not enough. Yes, there's some repetition in the molding sequences, but there are also a lot of tips that are specific to the form being cast. I highly recommend the entire series.

Great videos. They are a little under-edited at times and would have benefited from a second take now and then, but John Brown knows his stuff and does a good job of explaining his techniques. I would highly recommend this series to anyone interested in character or other figure sculpting.

I have been very impressed with this set of videos. Since I've been sculpting a while, I had read about (or heard colleagues talking about) many of the techniques. But it was the first time I had seen the whole process from start to finish -- doubly good since we see that process (with variations) for both a character head and a character maquette.

One thing that is missing -- but I don't think I can call it a weakness, just a choice -- is information about different kinds of molding and casting materials. When I went to my local materials supplier, he talked me out of silicon in favor of polyurethane, which sounds like a reasonable choice when you're not planning to make a ton of copies. But then, even from my toe's-dip into the world of casting materials, I know that it would have been impossible to include all the materials and possibilities in one instructional video.

In sum, I'd absolutely recommend this video. My interests lean more toward fine art, but nearly everything in the videos are applicable to fine art as well as toy or entertainment designs.

I think the greatest lesson I learned from John's DVDs is that perfection takes patience and not to rush. I have already applied many of his techniques into my own work with great results.

Very informative and useful information. Mr. Brown could use a couple lessons in the editing room however. He runs on a bit too long. He's quite mesmerizing with his mono-tone voice really.

A good series for the beginner-- very informative-- worth seeing. I thought it was funny how John Brown's instructional DVD set had no background music until the last DVD of the series, "Sculpting the Femme Fatale". The music seemed as if it's trying to make the female study more alluring! Instead, it was a little funny due to the sudden change of John's serious tone.

I love all of John Brown's work but this is my favorite! It's great to see him work from a live model, and incredibly helpful for beginning sculptors to see how he constantly references the model's outline to gage the size and shape of body parts more effectively than just trying to model all the details at once, a mistake beginners commonly make. Anyone who wants to learn true figurative sculpting techniques would benefit from watching this.

Incredible DVD, John Brown is truely a master. He does not skip over anything. It does need some editing, but you always have fast forward if you want to skip ahead. I would rather fast forward past something than omit it entirely from the DVD.

It was a surprise that the diskette contained such clear, complete information on constructing the Armature. The manner of tutoring was excellent. The entire presentation was a piece of art on its own. Yes I will share my opinion with anyone. Thanks

Been a sculptor for many years and found the video very informative. It could have been shortened by about 15 minutes during the initial layup of clay on the armature where nothing much was happening but other than that the lighting, photography, commentary and content was very good.

Remarkable, technical, thorough, artistic. Well shot, well lighted, great sound and editing. The sculptures I have made since seeing this video and applying the techniques taught in it are 1000 time better than what I was producing before. Wonderful work. An utterly remarkable DVD worth of 10 stars!

Excellent teacher! I have watched many videos where the person was good at their craft but their teaching skills were very limited. This video is very detailed which is necessary and much appreciated. The character sculpture series is very well taught with much emphasis on each individual step in sculpting. Most teachers will not give you information about where to purchase material etc. This video series covers all the information needed for beginning and advanced sculpting. Well done, would love to see more.
