Furniture Making how-to video: Tage Frid by Tage Frid 5_bulb Review this video!

Tage Frid is known as the "Dean of American Woodworking." Over his 50-year career as a woodworker, educator, and author, he helped thousands learn woodworking. This DVD video is an opportunity to visit the master in his shop and home and listen to him as he shares his wisdom.

Never before released in its entirety, this documentary shows Frid as he builds several pieces and discusses how his philosophy of designing around construction plays into his work. Frid also demonstrates such woodworking basics as sharpening a chisel and cabinet scraper as well as how to make multiple spline joints and cut half-blind dovetails. Two bonus segments on laminating in form to make salad servers and veneering a coffee table are also included.

"Frid has done more than any other woodworker I know to make the crafting of fine furniture practical, safe and reasonably expedient." -Popular Woodworking

Worth every penny! Tage Frid (1915 - 2004) is the consumate old-master in this video. You'll learn a lot watching him, but don't expect a step-by-step "PowerPoint" style presentation. It's much more like you're in his shop with him and he's just talking while he works. Watch this guy sharpen his chisels and scrapers and you'll wonder why you ever bought all those fancy jigs...he uses none of them and does just fine thank you. It is a joy to watch a master craftsman working.

What a great DVD. I never knew about the late Tage Frid but always saw his name in Taunton publications. The DVD follows him around his shop as he builds a cabinet. Just to see how he sharpens a chisel and cabinet scraper is worth the whole rental cost. Very simple and no expensive jigs are used. He is very likeable and I can see why he was so beloved in the woodworking circles. The bonus sections are very good too. I wish there was more available on this man and his work.

While Mr. Frid is a very likable fellow, I wasn't really fond of this video. The video seems like it was filmed by a teenager and edited in his parents basement. Most of the file Mr. Frid is doing a voice over, but you can still hear people talking from the original video. In certain parts of the video someone else starts doing part of the voice over. The audio on this video was very distracting. As for the woodworking, you can certainly see Mr. Frid knows his stuff. It was interesting to see some his methods of construction. I would like to mention though, this video isn't for the beginner. Most of the topics are not covered thoroughly. It gives you more of an overview of his methods that a seasoned woodworker will benefit by. Probably one of the best things about this video is that Mr. Frid invites you into his home to see the pieces he has made and explain some of the design elements. This gives the video a significant historical value.

Good feature on the life and work of Tage Frid. Frid was a staple of Fine Woodworking articles and books in the early days of the craft revival in the late 70. He wrote 3 durable books and while some of his furniture is dated or ugly, he developed at least one timeless piece, his stool, which is a huge achiement. He trained many generations of woodworkers at RIT.

His working style was practical without any limitations due to lack of skill or familiarity with hand or machine tools. His approach can at times be a little rough, like the picture in one of his books of a saw with it's teeth mangled due to his own rough use.

This tape covers some day to day aspects of his home life, travels to his retirement shop, with detailed scenes of Frid at work. He cuts half blind dovetails, does veneer, and so on. Some of this material appeared in short pieces otherwise released by FWW.

It's a good video if you want to see an old craftsman in action. You will get to see his shop and a few of his techniques. It was worth the money.
