Sandblast Glass Etching

...with Norm Dobbins

Glass how-to video: Sandblast Glass Etching by Norm Dobbins 4_bulb Review this video!

Surface Etching Techniques

Surface etching is the easiest abrasive etching technique to learn and the fastest to produce finished etchings on glass. It is much faster than etching with etching creme and produces more consistent results. There are, however, many things to learn if you want to get it right. This video shows you everything you need to know to do surface etching, including equipment and supplies necessary, how to locate and prepare designs, applying and cutting resist, blasting the glass and finishing. There are also sections on using pre-cut resists, on-site etching techniques and safety considerations.

This is where to start if you don't know anything about abrasive (sandblast) etching or for a refresher or for helping train employees - even friends! It starts with a basic explanation of what abrasive etching is and goes on to present several projects. Simple projects are explained and demonstrated first, then more complex projects. You can follow along with the tape and produce the same projects by using the supplied patterns. By the time you finish the tapes and projects, you will be well on your way to becoming a glass etching expert.

Multi-Level Carving

Sandblast glass carving techniques produce beautiful 3-dimensional carvings in any type of glass, flat or round.Single stage, two stage and multi-stage (or multi-level) carving techniques are thoroughly explained and demonstrated on this video. Learn everything you need to know to carve glass, including analyzing the design for proper carving sequence, how to carve different types of designs, equipment and supplies necessary. There are also sections on using pre-cut resists, carving techniques using an on-site blaster and safety considerations. The video is based on an explanation--presentation--demonstration model.

Each technique is first explained, then the project meant to show that technique is presented and demonstrated step by step. The video starts out with the simplest one-stage carving technique and progresses to increasingly more complex multi-stage techniques and projects.

Multi-Stage Shading: Techniques for Shaded Etching

The shading technique of glass etching is the most unusual, producing effects that look very much like airbrushing, except that they are permanently etched into the glass. Few glass etchers know anything about this technique. Of those who do, even less really understand and can successfully practice this striking technique. It is not well known, very little reference material is written about it, and it is the technique least forgiving of mistakes. Because this is a multi-stage technique, the elements of a design can touch each other, so designs can be much more sophisticated than with surface etching. With the shading technique, the distinctions between elements are created by manipulating the shades of gray between two elements that touch. Although the shading technique is the most challenging to learn, it is faster than the carving technique in creating a finished piece.

Designing for Glass Etching

Many special techniques are included in this unique presentation. We start out by showing you where to get designs (especially if you are not an artist), even how to adapt designs from photographs. Then we show how to convert designs used for surface etching to those used for carving and shading, and vice versa.

A major part of designing is knowing how to combine the different etching techniques in one project, to best make use of the strengths of each technique. There are presentations on how to use special techniques like controlled glue chipping and using found resist materials to create unique textures on glass. These textures are very compatible with etched designs and few people know how to produce them.

Excellent series of DVDs. The videos assume no prior experience on the viewer's part. All required equipment is thoroughly explained.

I found this video very interesting. It is tedious at points, but worth veiwing. A lot of information.

I liked this video, but it was very long and drawn out no intermediate designs went from simple to overly complex. You need longer than a week if you rent the whole 4 video set. Not enough time. Take notes as you watch.

This video was informative on the glue chips but the rest of it assumes you already watched the other three videos. I wish that was stated somewhere else. You will be lost if you start with this one. Very disappointed with this video as a whole.

Great instructional DVD. Although the DVD is dated, at the end Norm Dobbins' gives an update on the equipment. I enjoyed learning all the different methods of transferring the patterns.

I enjoyed the video on multi-stage shading by Norm Dobbins. He explained the technique in detail then demonstrated the technique.

These videos are great. However I wish Norm Dobbins would do an updated video since he's much more mature now. It's hard to watch videos like this since they are very drawn out but very informative. You can definitely become a very good glass artist by watching these videos. I'm truly amazed at your services, thank you.

You couldn't ask for a better video. This art seems very hidden from the public, no one talks about it that does it. However, I've learn on my own and happen to find your website. I looked for videos and only found two sources...Etchmaster and SmartFlix. This worked out perfect...you offer the same videos that's sold by Etchmaster. I recommend these series for anyone that enjoys working with glass. You would need all four videos to get the best understanding of glass and different techniques. I've been working with glass for two years now and these videos help me take glass blasting to the next level. Thank you.

Needs updating. Was shot a long time ago and content and actual filming could be improved.

Needs updating. Part of a series that all could have been much better if redone. Photography could be much improved. Having said that it is still the best info we have. Would advise anyone to rent the series if into sandblasting art.

Although this DVD was done quite a while ago, the bulk of it still applies, and any updates are added as a separate section. I found it informative and easy to follow, and am glad it is available.
