Audio quality is terrible, and the lighting isn't great either. Was this a high school project?

Some of the information is outdated as well, or at least not as current as it should be. Even in 2004, when this DVD set was created, the focus should have been on digital filmaking, not analog.

Marc is certainly knowledgeable about his topics, but the film and audio quality are poor enough to be a constant distraction

This review covers disc 1 and 2. Obviously this is a home-made effort. That said, Marc Spress is very thorough in this tutorial. Based on his experience at Will Vinton studios (those California Raisins commercials from the 80s), Spress covers everything from cameras, sets, timing, replacement animation, etc. He shares lots of old-school tricks and techniques. He uses a VHS camcorder and something called a Video Lunchbox to shoot the puppets. He is incorrect when referring to VHS as a "digital photography". VHS is analog. He draws on his computer screen with markers to plot out the puppet's movements. It is unfortunate that Spress's technique is so dated. Obviously there are software programs out there that assist with motion control and timing, in-betweening, etc, so you don't have to draw on your computer screen with magic markers! He briefly covers a software program that assists with lip-synching. Spress clearly knows what he is talking about and shares a wide range of information. Still, it would have been nice if he could have had a buddy hold the camera for him.
