Jose says: "This brand new video was just produced in 99 as a result of the most ambitious project undertaken by the author. It features his shopmade modelmaker's variable speed milling machine. The video is basically a complete basic milling operations course but rather than boring the viewer with dozens of unrelated procedures, you get to see the author produce a dovetailed tool block for his quick change tool system he designed for his 7 x 10 mini lathe. This is a four hour presentation that will leave you asking for more, even after four fun packed hours."

This is a pretty good introduction to vertical milling for the home machinist. The reviewer performs most basic milling and setup tasks on a homemade mini-mill, which is a pretty impressive machine. Basic clamping and locating are shown, with frank evaluations of various techniques for each. The demonstrator is obviously an accomplished machinist, and the narrative includes a number of tips and bacground information not generally found in texts. The operation of end mills, slitting saws, dovetail cutters, key cutters and fly mills are shown in some detail, with some intelligent and helpful commentaries about their use and operation. The lighting and photography are adequate to see the operations. Downsides: The video only shows the operation of one machine, so toolholding information is limited to one rather unique configuration. The closeups of cutting operations are a little long, but if you fastforward through them you might miss some of the narrative. And its sometimes hard to tell if he's cutting steel or aluminum. But all-in-all, it's a worthwhile video from a knowledgeable guy who obviously put a lot of thought and work into it.
Pretty basic, but that's exactly what I need. It is so often the way the presenter goes about a task that is so revealing. No book can compare to watching this presenter.
Good Stuff! I liked the way it was presented with common language and without the presenter acting like he was late for lunch. I enjoy the slow approach and the good explanations of tricks and techniques. If I could have asked for anything to improve the presentation, it would be for the camera person to not let some shots be blocked by hands. Even that was just a minor thing. I've already ordered and am watching another. I'll be back often to see the things I want without having to pay a fortune for it.
Picture is decent. Audio is clear. Instruction is decent and straightforward. It's worth the rental.
Easily one of Jose's better videos. If you are an absolute beginner, as I was, this video is jam packed with instructions on different ways for edge finding, precise hole placement and various other basic milling procedures. I liked how he started by actually milling a project work piece. It gave a little more clarity on what exactly he was accomplishing with each task. It seemed as though Jose actually had some sort of script on this video. Very little wasted time. All of the video was clear and the sound was very good. Also good use of close-ups. This is well worth the rental and a must have for any beginner.
Very good video for a beginner for sure. Covers a lot of information 4 hours long! I learned so much from this video.
The only thing I didn't like about it was he sometimes instead of skipping forward to when the cut is finished you sit through 20 of the same thing. This wouldn't be bad you could just skip forward but every once in a while he hides very useful information in there that skipping forward would have missed. So you have to sit through a bunch of mindless cuts as to not miss any important information he throws in there. This is the only reason I didn't give it the best score.
Totally worth the rental, however.
I am a complete neophyte when it comes to using any machine tool. I was amazed at some of the things I saw in this video. I was particularly concerned with the setting of the work piece accurately on the table and precisely setting it in reference to the spindle axis. The video made this perfectly clear. Showing the various cutting components was very helpful. The chapter on drilling and tapping cleared up quite a few questions.
My advice: any new-comer will learn a great deal. Rent the DVD.

Good basic material. Good presentation.
It's a good video, but I would recommend Darrell Holland's "Professional Machine Shop Course". It's on a Bridgeport full-sized mill, he's more knowledgeable about the subject matter and it's a better (quicker) pace! However, it's more thorough and quite a few DVDs...
Slow pace, good quality, good instructor. If you have no mill understanding at all, this is the place to start. It does drag on at times, but should give you an understanding of the basics and then some. If you are just trying to pick up extra info like I was, don't get this one. Also, it depends on if you are wanting a mini-mill or full size - IE: Bridgeport how-to-DVD. This one is really for the guy making little projects for a hobby - Radio Control, model trains etc.
Delivers what it promises. This is an introductory video that actually manages to cover a good bit of ground for someone new to milling operations. It is pretty dry. The operator is clearly narrating. But we never know him except as a voice and a pair of hands. The narration is pleasantly pedantic but humorless. The pace is as unhurried as the progress of a glacier. Well designed for the very newbie.
This is a very good introduction to the types of machining operations you can do on a mill. The presenter is clear with his explanations and the camera work is also clear and provides good visual images of the various operations carried out. I would highly recommend it.
This is too basic for anyone that has used a mill at least once. The instructor speaks very clearly but so slowly that I found myself fast forwarding the video a lot. I found some pearls of wisdom but I had to wade through a lot stuff to get them.
He is very proud of his home made mill (and he should be) but he spent too much time explaining a mill that I will never use.
Excellent video... It is a great learning tool for anyone wanting to learn about milling.
The DVD "The Milling Machine and it's uses" was just exactly what I had hoped it would be. The basic concepts and even more importantly, the ability to watch the process was invaluable. Thank you for a great product John Baillargeon
Very nice DVD. Lots of practical knowledge and tips that you usually only get after years of practice.
I was not impressed by a machinist using Vice Grips in place of a 3/4 or whatever size wrench!!!!!!!
Good quick overview, which is what I wanted to see thanks
The "Milling Machine and its uses" is a good video. It is great for a beginner like me, to help get a feel for the machine. I look forward to viewing more of the same in the future.
The video is on how the author built his own milling machine. He is quite proud of it.
This is a great introduction to milling for someone who has never seen a milling machine. Like me. It is very clear and gives a clear impression of what milling machine is capable of, even a home made one like author's (who is justly proud of it!).
I could nit-pick about some of the editing and camera work as well as absence of some basics like setting up the machine in the first place but overall well worth the rental.
The first 2 hours and 45 minutes could be condensed. The only good part was the last bit.
This guy just teaches bad habits. I don't think he read a real book on basic machining.
It's a waste of money to rent this one or anything by this author.
